JOB SUMMARY

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 2:30pm

  • Provide appropriate enrichments to the animals’ structural and social environments and provide opportunities for species-typical activities.
  • Monitor colony behavioral health, and provide care for animals needing special attention and/or treatment.
  • Observe animals and report behavioral abnormalities.
  • Assist in performing behavioral assessments in response to reports of behavioral abnormalities.
  • Work with other departments to coordinate animal psychological/behavioral enrichment, including the acclimation and socialization of study animals.
  • Work with other Behavioral staff to precondition animals for study procedures.
  • Assist with evaluation of new enrichment devices and provide input on strategies for individually and socially housed animals.
  • Routinely handle animals as required for duties.
  • Maintain and track data related to social housing, exemptions to social housing, and abnormal behavior.
  • Assist with training animal care staff and other site personnel on aspects of animal behavior and enrichment as needed.
  • Maintain documentation for the Behavioral Management Program.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in scientific related discipline.

Experience:  4-6 years related experience in animal science, biology, chemistry/pharmacy, or similar lab environment or must have fully satisfied technical and experience requirements for the previous level. GLP experience preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the LAT level strongly preferred.

Other:  Demonstrated advanced technical and analytical skills. Effective communication and leadership skills. Ability to handle a variety of laboratory animals. Proficient in technical skills and the operation of data collection equipment. Knowledge of GLP’s and other federal regulations and guidelines relating to the care of laboratory animals required. Understanding of basic, intermediate, and complex study design and protocols. Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines. Computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.

The pay range for this position is $32-$35/hour. Please note that compensation varies based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, and certifications.
