The challenge of quality cancer care for family caregivers

Abstract

Objectives: To provide an overview of the factors that challenge family caregivers of patients with cancer and review issues related to the role of family members as caregivers.

Data sources: Research based and other articles and reports from the government and professional groups.

Conclusion: There are many challenges for family caregivers of cancer patients. Nurses must be sensitive to the unmet needs of caregivers and provide the support they need to provide patient care. Health policy is needed to provide support to these caregivers.

Implications for nursing practice: Nurses must take a leadership role to provide standards, guidelines, and best practices for support of the caregiver.
