In return, we’ll help you build a career that you can feel passionate about. Job Summary The following are responsibilities related to the Bacteriology Technician Floater:

• Care for and maintains laboratory animals in accordance with Animal Welfare Act and the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, as well as, NIH policies and guidelines and other pertinent regulations and policies.

• Accesses, sets up, and runs all incoming samples. Updates the WebHealth database and keeps written logs of all accessioned samples. Plates incubated broths onto appropriate media.

• Prepare and stain slides for evaluation. Perform isolations, biochemical tests, identification tests, sensitivities, and other benchtop procedures as needed.

• Perform euthanasia, routine gross necropsy, and parasitology examinations of animals received from both internal and external customers.

• Collect and prepare tissue for further evaluation in the PCR, bacteriology, and parasitology labs.

• Prepare blood samples for shipment to be tested by off-site laboratory.

• Contacts the facility veterinarian, investigator, or contact person with questions regarding submissions. Actively interacts with customer as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance.

• Photocopies, scans, faxes, and files paperwork. Organizes, unpacks, and rotates stock.

• Shares responsibility for departmental housekeeping, while maintaining appropriate inventory levels of departmental supplies.

• Prepares and submits written reports, charts, logs and inventories as requested by Supervisor.

• May assist with other duties in the main lab including slide preparation and staining.

• Maintains and operates equipment and use supplies according to SOPs and safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adheres to safety procedures. Complies with safety policies and procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances.

• Maintains required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.

The following are minimum qualifications related to theBacteriology Technician Floaterposition:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline required.

Experience: Experience in a laboratory environment preferred, either through employment or school.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Certification/Licensure: none required.
