Abstract

Coeliac disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder that is caused by an inappropriate immune response in the gut to wheat gluten and similar proteins of barley and rye. The disease has a multifactorial aetiology involving multiple genes and environmental factors. In recent years we have gained new knowledge of the molecular basis of this disorder; this paper gives an overview of the current understanding of the pathogenesis of coeliac disease.
