Latinot eivät todennäköisemmin kuin ei-latinalaisamerikkalaiset valkoiset pääsevät terveydenhuoltoon, heillä on tietoa olemassa olevista tupakoinnin lopettamiseen liittyvistä resursseista, he saavat neuvoja tupakoinnin lopettamiseen ja käyttävät lääkehoitoa tupakoinnin lopettamiseen. Näistä huomattavista tupakkaan liittyvistä eroista huolimatta latinoyhteisölle suunniteltuja tehokkaita interventioita ei ole. Mobiiliteknologia tarjoaa lupaavan menetelmän esteiden ylittämiseen ja kulttuurisesti yhdenmukaisen hoidon tarjoamiseen latinotupakoijille. Mobiiliinterventioiden toteuttaminen latinoiden keskuudessa on vähäistä huolimatta siitä, että latinalaiset ovat mobiiliteknologian nopeimpia omaksujia, jotka käyttävät älypuhelimia ja tekstiviestejä nopeammin kuin ei-latinalaisamerikkalaiset valkoiset. Tehokas, kulttuurisesti tarkoituksenmukainen interventio mobiiliteknologian menetelmiä käyttäen, joka voisi olla laajasti käytössä klinikoilla ja yhteisöpohjaisissa palveluntarjoajissa, voisi dramaattisesti lisätä kattavuutta ja lisätä latinolaisten terveyteen kohdistuvia vaikutuksia.
Decídetext on kulttuurisesti yhtenäinen menetelmä, jolla lisätään latino-tupakoijien pääsyä vieroituspalveluihin ja autetaan heitä kehittämään, toteuttamaan ja noudattamaan henkilökohtaista lopetussuunnitelmaa. Jos tämä toimenpide onnistuu, se voidaan helposti toteuttaa erilaisissa ympäristöissä, mukaan lukien yhteisön tilat, klinikat, apteekit, ensiapuhuoneet ja klinikan odotustilat, ja vähentää hoitoeroja, vähentää tupakkaan liittyvää sairastuvuutta ja kuolleisuutta sekä parantaa terveyttä ja elämänlaatua noin Yhdysvalloissa on 9 miljoonaa latinalaistupakointia.
Tavoite 1. Arvioida kulttuurisesti mukautetun Decídetext-ohjelman ja tavanomaisen hoidon vaikutusta tupakoinnin lopettamiseen kuudennen kuukauden aikana latino-tupakoijien keskuudessa. Kuukauden 6 kohdalla Decídetextin tupakoijilla on huomattavasti korkeampi kotiniinivarmennettu 7 päivän pisteen esiintyvyys (ei savukkeita viimeisen 7 päivän aikana) kuin kontrolliryhmän tupakoijilla. Ohjelman tehokkuutta tutkitaan myös viikolla 12 (hoidon lopussa) muutosmekanismien arvioimiseksi ja 12. kuukaudella laajennettujen tulostietojen saamiseksi.
Tavoite 2. Arvioida terapeuttista allianssia, farmakoterapian käyttöä ja itsetehokkuutta oletetun hoidon vaikutuksen välittäjinä kotiniinivarmennettuun 7 päivän tupakoinnin pidättymiseen kuukaudella 6 latinotupakoijien keskuudessa. Hypoteesimme on, että Decídetext on tehokkaampi tupakoinnin lopettamisessa kuin tavallinen hoito lisäämällä terapeuttista liittoa, farmakoterapian käyttöä ja itsetehokkuutta lopettamiseen.
Tavoite 3. Suorittaa prosessin arviointi, joka voi antaa tietoa havainnoista ja tulevista parannuksista. Decídetextin arviointi sisältää: 1) tyytyväisyyden ohjelmaan ja sen osiin; 2) tekstiviestijärjestelmän käyttötavat ja yhteiset sisältöteemat osallistujien välisessä tekstiviestivuorovaikutuksessa.

- Tiedätkö kuinka lukea ja puhua englantia ja/tai espanjaa?

- Oletko polttanut tupakkaa vähintään 6 kuukautta?

- Kuinka monta päivää käytät muita tupakkatuotteita tavallisen viikon aikana?
- Oletko kiinnostunut lopettamaan tupakoinnin seuraavien 30 päivän aikana?
- Osallistutko tällä hetkellä johonkin muuhun tupakoinnin lopettamisohjelmaan tai käytätkö jotain lääkkeitä tupakoinnin lopettamiseksi?
- Osallistuuko joku kotitalouden jäsen tähän tutkimukseen?

Osallistujat saavat tablettipohjaisen interaktiivisen koulutusistunnon, 6 kuukautta tekstiviestipohjaista neuvontaa, joka sisältää kehotteet päästä ilmaiseen lääkehoitoon.

Decídetextin osallistujat ohjataan tablet-pohjaiseen ohjelmistoon.
Osallistujat saavat interaktiivisen koulutusistunnon, joka johdattaa heidät kieleen sopivaan, kulttuurisesti merkitykselliseen tupakoinnin lopettamiseen liittyvään tietoon, tupakoinnin perustietojen keräämiseen ja lopettamiseen valmistautumiseen liittyviin valintoihin/suunnitelmiin.
Lopetussuunnitelmiin kuuluu: 1) lopetuspäivän valinta, 2) NRT-valinta, 3) suunnitelma tupakoinnin vihjeiden poistamiseksi, 4) laukaisutilanteiden tunnistaminen ja 5) ehdotettujen selviytymisstrategioiden valinta.
Osallistujien tietoja ja valintoja käytetään painetun 1-sivuisen yksilöllisen hoitosuunnitelman laatimiseen.
Tablettikomponentit, arviointikohteet, ääniselostus, lyhyet multimedia-opetusvideoleikkeet ja painettu hoitosuunnitelma on kehitetty käsittelemään heikkoa lukutaitoa.
