Job Summary Maintain and monitor the health, pre and post-operative care and physical environments within the customer's varied animal care environments.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.  They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified.

⦁    Performs technical functions including, but not limited to:

⦁    Anesthesia Induction & Maintenance of various laboratory animal species as described in research protocols

⦁    Pre-, Peri- and Post-Operative Observations and Monitoring

⦁    Aseptic Surgical Preparation

⦁    Venous Catheter Placement

⦁    Various injection techniques (IP, IM AND SQ)

⦁    Blood collection techniques for various laboratory species (mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, swine)

⦁    Intubation and ventilator support of swine and rabbits

⦁    Required documentation performed in GLP format and in accordance with facility mandated standards.

⦁    Maintain surgical suite(s) in ready capacity

⦁    Develop and maintain surgical packs and equipment to match procedures

⦁    Develop surgical and maintenance procedures for the surgical suites.

⦁    Maintenance of surgical and anesthetic equipment

⦁    Daily operational checks of anesthesia machines

⦁    Assist with the receipt, stocking and maintenance of medical supply inventories

⦁    Maintain inventory of surgical supplies

⦁    Maintain system for ordering/reorder limits

⦁    Maintain medical crash cart 

⦁    Maintain system for reviewing expiration dates

⦁    Manage controlled substance and non-controlled pharmacy inventory and record keeping.

⦁    Actively interact with facility supervisor, consulting veterinarian(s) and investigators as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance.

⦁    Provide environmental enrichment feed and other enrichment stimuli and/or provide behavioral assessments.

⦁    Provide quality assurance to include animal health surveillance, monitoring of the effectiveness of surgical suite sanitation and autoclaving procedures, monitoring of internal facility reports for monitoring deviations from pre-established parameters, other quality assurance services as deemed necessary by Supervisor.

⦁    Assist in assessing training needs, as well as, developing and presenting training for staff and investigators.

⦁    Assist in projecting future equipment and resource needs for all surgical/procedure areas.

⦁    Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adheres to safety procedures. Complies with safety policies and procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances.

  Job Qualifications

⦁    Education:   Achievement of an Associate of Arts degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent college level program is required. 

⦁    Experience:  Minimum two year related animal care and handling experience required.  

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.  

⦁    Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the Animal Laboratory Technician level (LAT) required; LATG is required within one year.
