Our Electron Microscopy business enables customers to find meaningful answers to questions that accelerate breakthrough discoveries, increase efficiency, and ultimately change the world. The EM business designs, manufactures, and supports the broadest range of high-performance microscopy workflows that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales.

Combining hardware and software expertise in electron, ion, and light microscopy and with deep application knowledge in the Materials Science, Life Sciences, and Semiconductor markets, the worldwide Electron Microscopy employees are dedicated to customers pursuit of discovery and resolution to global challenges.

The Americas NanoPort team, within the Sales and Service Division (SSD), runs an innovative Electron Microscopy Centre of Excellence, supporting account managers and external Thermo Fisher Scientific customers in the Sciences and Industry markets. Key goals of the team are to deliver high-quality Customer Applications Training and Support, and to conduct carefully prepared Product and Workflow Demonstrations.

How to make an impact

The Applications Manager is responsible for directing day-to-day tasks of a team of applications scientists who are targeted at sales support and customer applications training primarily in the Americas region. The team is based in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Building on a solid scientific foundation combined with a strong commercial interest, the Applications Manager can speak technically about the products and coach the team during daily work. Major responsibilities include scheduling of tasks, management of the technical team including their career development, and close interaction with product marketing and product development.

What will you do?

  • Manage all aspects of the NanoPort Semiconductor team who provide sales support and customer trainings, as well as providing career development opportunities for the team.
  • Schedule tasks for the application scientists and manage all team priorities and escalations.
  • Empower and challenge the team, bringing the best balance between business efficiency and scientific credibility while stimulating constructive and cooperative working relationships; creating team spirit.
  • Work with the global partner for Semiconductor to translate marketing messaging in daily practice with the team, ensure hands-on skills and understanding of how to demonstrate value for a broad range of customers.
  • Ensure perfect performance of the demonstration instrumentation.
  • Build up and stimulate pro-active and result-driven interactions with the NanoPort’s business partners, for example sales, product marketing, R&D, manufacturing, and customer service.
  • Coach the team on the content of their work; besides demonstrations and customer training, this also includes such tasks as: applications support for new product development, contributions to training manuals and release notes, experimental research to advance applications knowledge, presentations at workshops and conferences.

How You Will Get Here

The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:

  • Requires a university degree in Materials Science, Chemistry and or Physics. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge and recent hands-on experience with TEM, FIB and/or SEM are required.
  • Detailed understanding of Semiconductor devices and applications.
  • 5 or more years of experience in a relevant position within a Semiconductor research, failure analysis, or fab. environment.
  • Proven ability to lead highly educated and highly skilled professionals
  • Strong attention to detail, critical eye for quality and pursuing continuous improvement.
  • Proven track record of prioritizing, driving multiple projects simultaneously and working to meet tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with customers in support of system sales; affinity with a value-based selling approach; Interest in commercial, marketing and business aspects, and making those aspects live in the team.
  • Strong team player.
  • Excellent, communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Works well with multi-functional and cross-cultural teams
  • Frequent travel, both domestic and international (up to 50%).  Possession of a valid passport.
