E. General Information on the Trial
E.1 Medical condition or disease under investigation
E.1.1Medical condition(s) being investigated
these patients will have bile acid induced diarrhoea identified by an increased serum 7a-OH-cholestenone.
and will have a history of one of 1. ileal resection 2. idiopathic bile acid diarrhoea.3. post cholecystectomy diarrhoea
MedDRA Classification
E.1.3Condition being studied is a rare disease No
E.2 Objective of the trial
E.2.1Main objective of the trial
To compare the effectiveness of hydroxypropylcellulose and questran in reducing diarrhoea in different groups of patients with bile acid malabsorption.

is HPC asuitable alternative to questran in these clinical circumstances?
E.2.2Secondary objectives of the trial
Is the action of hydroxypropyl cellulose different from questran? - measurement of serum 7a-OH-cholestenone a marker of bile acid turnover, should help answer this question

E.3Principal inclusion criteria
Patients will have bile acid induced diarrhoea - frequently passing 5-7 watery stools per day
E.4Principal exclusion criteria
less than 16 years in age

presence of active inflammation

currently using anti inflammatory agents such as prednisolone.
