In return, we’ll help you build a career that you can feel passionate about. Job Summary We are seeking a Histology Technician for our Insourcing Solutions site located in Bethesda, MD.

 

The following are responsibilities related to the Histology Technician:

  Print daily sign-out sheet, date, initial, and hole-punch first thing each morning.  Log in cases in numerical order. Each day, the H&E slides, from microtomy that was performed on either the previous afternoon or in the morning, should be placed on a rack. Perform daily check of waste containers.  Change out containers and complete tags as appropriate. When there are two full containers, call Chemical Waste Management for pick up and replacement.  Dispose of orange bags under the hood when full. Keep alcohol and distilled water containers full.  Dump the formalin jars daily.  Log in submitted wet tissues with date of arrival on the associate white tag then enter it in the Histo Database in numerical order. Load the tissue processor by alternating large and small (mouse) tissues in the order of oldest to newest.  RUSH cases are always priority. File white tags in numerical order. Embed tissue and clean the area when the work is complete.  Put all tools back in their proper places. Perform microtomy and clean the area when the work is complete. Label and assemble special stain slides.  Date, sign out, and distributed cases. Change the first of each solution on the tissue processor on the 15th of every month (i.e. 95%, 100%, 80% etc. should each have the first solution changed). Additional laboratory maintenance should be performed at the end of each month including dumping all solutions from the tissue processor, perform a warm water flush, make alcohol concentrations, and clean work area. Performs all tasks related to the processing of tissues into slides from GLP and non-GLP studies.  Identifies and takes corrective action to remedy improperly processed tissue. Ensures that all study schedules for histology are met and additional recuts and stains are performed in a timely manner.  Notate in the Histo database if the slides/blocks will be given to an investigator. Assists in providing training to new technicians, including histology theory and practice, database usage, and general laboratory practices. May provide results and/or technical assistance to internal and external customers via verbal and/or written communications Assists in providing leadership and motivation to all departmental personnel. Actively interacts with customers as required to solve customer requests, inquiries, and complaints and to provide technical assistance. Prepares and submits written reports, charts, logs and inventories as requested by Supervisor. Ensures accurate recording of data.

 

The following are minimum qualifications related to the Histology Technician position:

  Education:  Associate’s degree (A.A. or A.S.) or equivalent in Biological Sciences or related discipline. Bachelor of Science degree (B.A. or B.Sc.) in technically related field (e.g. Biology) preferred.  Experience:  Minimum of one year of related technical experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above. Certification/Licensure:  HT/HTL certification preferred.  AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level or higher or certification within one year of hire or promotion preferred.
