Job Summary We are seeking a Director, Animal Resources for Insourcing Solutions client in Boston, MA.  The candidate will be responsible for operational scrutiny in terms of both fiduciary matters and facility oversight. Oversight  of the animal care staff assigned to maintain research animals and husbandry practices. Serves as a primary contact with research investigators to provide support for the overall research strategy and to ensure the care and use of laboratory animals is in compliance with established policies and procedures. In collaboration with the Veterinarian, this position will develop procedures and policies to meet all institutional, local, state and federal guidelines and regulations.

 

The essential duties for the Director, Animal Resources are: 

 

•    Develops a high performing, cohesive team to oversee Operations. Serves as a mentor, provides leadership and guidance  to Senior Supervisors, Supervisors and Lead Techs. In the absence of Manager and/or Supervisors, this position provides coverage.

•    Ensures that all policies, procedures and programs are conducted in compliance with all institutional, city, state and federal regulations and guidelines, including; AAALAC, OLAW,  USDA and the IACUC.

•    Oversees and, working with the Veterinarian, determines appropriate records to be  maintained for historical reference and compliance, including, environmental records, room logs, health reports, cage card labels, autoclave records, cagewash records, animal census reports.

•    Communicates regularly and works collaboratively with Investigators to provide quality of services, including but not limited to; appropriate utilization of resources, animal space allocations, specific research issues, adherence to establish standards.

•    Participates in capital and operational budget, and provides operational scrutiny of current year fiduciary categories in order to establish coming year’s budget and capital needs. Works within established organizational guidelines, including the review of equipment specifications, purchase orders and contractual agreements with commercial suppliers. 

•    Drives and implements change and continuous improvement to Operations. Utilizes industry/market trends, keeps current with industry initiatives and new technology. Develops standard operating procedures, policies and training programs that are required by regulatory agencies and that will make the program a more efficient and effective.

•    Responsible for overseeing and implementing facility macroenvironmental parameters as well as the monitoring of environmental changes in animal rooms and reporting deviations to the appropriate maintenance department as well as internally to the appropriate personnel.

•    Develop and implement policies and procedures, that ensure the laboratory animals receive the highest level of humane and quality animal care. Includes but not limited to the development of training manuals, computer based training modules and overseeing the development and maintenance of a training program.

•    Collaboratively develops strategic planning initiatives.  Institutes new technology, program development and implementation.  Evaluates program for success as well as need for enhancement.  Recommends/direct changes in facility, program, policy or procedures as needed.

  Job Qualifications  

Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in Animal Science or related discipline. Masters preferred. 

•    Experience:  Eight years related experience in a research animal facility. Minimum of five years experience in managing a full service animal facility and three years of progressive management/administrative experience in a large academic research animal facility is required.

•    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

•    Certification/Licensure:  AALAS Certification at the LATG level. Eligibility for certification at the Certified Managers Animal Resources level (CMAR); obtained within 1 year of employment..
