Job Summary

BASIC SUMMARY:   Manage the purchasing staff to perform certain material management functions to cost effectively procure materials, equipment and services on a national basis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Manage purchasing operations, including sourcing and scheduling of supplies and equipment for specific company locations.
  • Establish working partnership with internal customers and vendor suppliers for effective reduced vendor base and maximum value.
  • Supervise preparation of bids and manage negotiations with suppliers on conflicts or questions on prices, deliveries, and specifications.
  • Manage purchasing and materials control procedures for specified locations in support of company financial reporting requirements.
  • Plan purchases based on materials/equipment in accordance with plans and specifications for inventory control or warehousing operations.
  • Review and authorize purchase orders based on vendor’s price, quality and ability to meet Charles River Laboratories’ expectations. Review requisitions, interpret contract terms and conditions, determine best supply sources and develop alternate suppliers to geographical and volume purchases.
  • Route documents and contracts through legal department for review.
  • Appropriately administer and control procurement related documents and processes. Adhere to established protocols and financial control procedures. Maintain adequate contractual relationships with vendors and suppliers. 
  • Manage the purchasing programs and vendors for quality achievement and statute compliance.
  • Serve as project coordinator on special projects and cooperate with production, research, engineering, and other departments in the development of equipment, product specifications, and substitute materials.
  • Implement supplier quality assurance programs as directed.
  • Manage activities of assigned group(s) to ensure effective performance of function.
  • Interview and select qualified exempt- and non-exempt level departmental personnel.  Recommend, review and approve personnel actions, including hiring, promotions and raises.  Partner with Human Resources in the handling of disciplinary issues.  Prepare and/or approve appropriate personnel action paperwork.  
  • Identify training and development needs of direct reports.  Develop and oversee the implementation of departmental training programs, including orientation; monitor training programs to ensure ongoing effectiveness.
  • Monitor performance of direct reports.  Provide regular coaching and counseling.  Prepare and deliver salary and performance reviews; review and approve performance and salary appraisals initiated by direct reports.

Continued Duties and Responsibilities

  • Authorize overtime as needed.  Review and approve time cards.  Review and approve vacation/time off requests and coordinate vacation/time off schedules.
  • Assist in the development of short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, and staffing requirements.  Assist in the development of a departmental plan for backup and succession of supervisory staff and key technical personnel.
  • Assist in the development and recommendation of departmental budget.  Authorize expenditures in accordance with budget.  Approve budget and expenses of subordinates.
  • Ensure optimum performance of group function.  Determine and implement techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices.
  • Develop and maintain departmental systems and SOPs.  Assist in the development and communication of departmental policies and procedures.  Partner with Human Resources to develop and approve job descriptions for subordinate positions; ensure communication of duties and responsibilities to employees.

Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A. /B.S.) or equivalent in business management or related discipline.
  • Experience:  Six or more years related experience and/or training.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Exhibits exceptional leadership skills and deep knowledge of GMP.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and safety in GMP regulated facilities, Pharmaceutical/Medical Device/Biotechnology.
  • Experience in a GxP environment and familiarity with manufacturing practices used in Cell Therapy Manufacturing or equivalent industry experience.
  • SAP experience required.
  • The ideal candidate for this position will be located in proximity to our Memphis TN location, but we are open to considering remote candidates.

Compensation Data

The pay range for this position is $100,000/yr. - $130,000/yr. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
