Job Summary

The Associate Research Scientist - EM will support the Electron Microscopy Core Laboratory at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). This Microscopist will be onsite at NIEHS as needed and will report to the Contract Officer Representative (COR). Key duties will include working closely with Principal Investigators to use electron microscopy to identify and highlight the ultrastructural features of cells for a wide variety of ongoing research projects. The Microscopist will provide guidance to laboratory staff in coordinating the activities of the Core Laboratory, assisting investigators and EM Lab staff in preparing samples with appropriate techniques. The Microscopist will also work with investigators to capture images using the on-site electron microscope and then prepare reports that support the contract Principal Investigator. The Microscopist will work closely with Charles River PAI personnel to ensure timely completion of projects and keeping the status of projects current.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work within the framework of Good Laboratory Practice regulations and facility Standard Operating Procedures
  • Evaluate prepared tissue sections by electron microscopy
  • Report results through established NIEHS procedures and directives
  • Assist NIEHS personnel in developing advanced techniques, such as immunoelectron microscopy, to enhance the capabilities of the EM lab
  • Provide laboratory support for troubleshooting the on-site electron microscope and digital camera, evaluation of specimen quality, and training of technicians in electron microscopy issues
  • Provide guidance to Core Laboratory TEM technician(s) as required
  • Aid in the training of Core Laboratory staff
  • Interact positively with NIEHS investigators and Core Laboratory staff

Job Qualifications

  • PhD level professional and/or 2 or more years of advanced training in electron microscopy and ultrastructural evaluations
  • Training in electron microscopy both in image interpretation and technical skills for support and troubleshooting of instrumentation and preparative methods for transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
  • Familiarity with gross and histologic anatomy of laboratory rodents
  • Familiarity with GLP practices
  • Ability to interact positively with NIEHS investigators and their staff, Core Laboratory staff, professional service providers, and vendors
