Adskillige tidligere undersøgelser har vist, at kliniske kontekstuelle faktorer, såsom patienters præferencer, spiller en vigtig rolle i patient-fysiske forhold med deraf følgende konsekvenser for kliniske resultater.
Samspillet mellem både patientens og lægens køn er ofte påvirket af eksisterende stereotyper.
Patientpræference for specifikt lægekøn er blevet undersøgt i videnskabelig litteratur.
Der er dog ingen undersøgelser, der analyserede køns rolle i osteopatisk medicin.
