Surface Scientist

Pharmaceutical Product Development (PPD)

Hillsboro, Oregon, United States of America

Job Description

Do you have a passion for innovative ideas and groundbreaking discoveries? With over $1 billion invested annually in R&D, at Thermo Fisher Scientific you’ll help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges, from giving cancer patients hope, ensuring safe drinking water and helping law enforcement tackle cases through forensics. We empower our teams to put science into meaningful action and give our R&D colleagues the autonomy, resources and tools they need to take science a step beyond.

Discover Impactful Work!

Charged particle optics, electron and ion guns, focusing columns, and high-brightness sources are at the heart of Thermo Fisher Scientific's Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB), and DualBeam tools serving the Nanotechnology market. We seek a surface scientist to assist in the research, design, development, execution, and implementation of a wide range of electron field emission source projects.

A Day in the Life:

We seek a Surface Scientist for activities which include one or more of the following tasks as determined by program needs, project priorities and scientist’s capabilities and interests.

  • Perform a variety of experiments as directed by the lead scientists with the objective of the development and characterization of high brightness ion and/or electron sources. Experiments typically involve the measurements of current–voltage relationships, energy spread, brightness, lifetime, noise, and stability. Experiments will require expertise with Focused Ion Beam (FIB). Experiments may also involve analyzing surfaces on the micro/nanoscale with SEM and TEM respectively
  • Machining micro- and nano- structures with laser and FIB
  • Perform analysis of experimental results using scientific techniques and standard computer software (Excel, R, python, Julia, etc.)
  • Documentation and presentation of research results in both written reports and live presentations
  • Development and testing of new laboratory and instrument control software
  • Maintain, analyze, and repair laboratory equipment as necessary

KEYS TO SUCCESS.

Minimum Education, Experience and Qualifications:
  • PhD in surface science, physics, or chemistry
  • 2+ years related professional experience or equivalent experience (can include academic experience).
  • An excellent grasp of fundamental physics and chemistry principles as well as surface analysis techniques (XPS, EDS, etc.)
  • Proficient and “hands-on” in the laboratory; performing experiments including working with standard electronics equipment, high voltage, ultrahigh vacuum equipment, and data acquisition systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment and implement solutions
  • Sufficient hand-eye coordination to handle and work with small delicate objects
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Additional Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience with electron or ion sources including field emission sources, plasma, and liquid metal ion sources
  • Electronics design and fabrication ability
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering principles including ability to create technical drawings
  • Fundamental Material Science knowledge
  • Experience mentoring intern master’s students

From research to reality:

Finally, while our group is responsible for research into the next generation of product, we also attend to the real-world efforts to get product out the door. Production of emitters still requires deep thinking to fix and/or optimize standard operating procedures. Our group's work with operations allows us to influence and protect revenue for the company.
