Job Description

Thermodynamics Engineer

The Team

The TEM Solutions R&D organization within Thermo Fisher Scientific develops solutions for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). In the R&D Mechatronics group within this organization we are a globally organized team with members in the city of Brno, Czech Republic and Eindhoven, The Netherlands. As a team, we develop groundbreaking technologies and deliver mechatronic modules related to sample manipulation (innovative TEM stages), sample transfer (loading and transport under room and cryogenic temperature conditions), sample and system conditioning (active vibration isolation systems, cryogenic systems for cooling), sample stimulation (electrical, heating) in and around the microscopes. Additionally, we cover the dynamics, mechatronics, and thermal competences within the R&D organization.

With the continuous drive of the company to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer, our modules are becoming more and more sophisticated and connected! Together with the Business Units, the Research (AT) Group, Global Digital Group and many collaborating partners and suppliers, we strive to convert the most promising technological concepts into real products.

The Position

As Thermodynamics Engineer you will join a hardworking and driven team and responsible for the thermodynamics aspects of high-tech electron-microscope modules or sub-systems. You will work closely with mechanical, electronics, software, mechatronics, dynamics, thermodynamics engineers, architects, project managers, and multidisciplinary colleagues outside R&D like sourcing, operations, and service.

You will typically be involved in 1 to 3 projects or activities in parallel. In these projects you can see your designs grow from a conceptual idea to a finished product for our customers. As linking pin within the development team, you will frequently be in contact with parties outside the project throughout the organization. The decisions made by you and your team will have direct business impact. Your challenge will be to find solutions for technological exciting problems, meeting the needs of all relevant parties, combining short term goals with long term needs. The position will allow you to grow both in technical as in business skills! We will challenge you to get the best out of yourself.

You will report directly to the group manager of the Mechatronics team within the TEM Solution R&D organization.

Key Responsibilities

In this role you will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Perform thermal simulations and analysis on mechanical systems and subsystems

  • Design, analyze and test mechanical systems, subsystems on thermodynamic performance

  • Collaborate with a team of engineers covering multiple competences (mechanical, electrical, software, dynamics)

  • Engage with system architects, engineers and project managers on thermodynamics aspects

  • Review system, module and component design on thermodynamic aspects

Qualifications

A successful candidate possesses the following combination of education and experience:

  • University Master or PhD in mechanical engineering with specialization in thermodynamics, or equivalent.
  • Additional work experience in this field is a plus.
  • Experience in mechanical simulations using finite element methods, testing and validation of mechanical numerical solutions and mechanical characterization of materials.
  • Experience in applied mechanics, FEM and material constitutive behavior.
  • Experience with software tools such as Matlab, UX and ANSYS.

You would characterize yourself as follows:

  • You take initiative, are self-steering and self-confident, and have perseverance.
  • You are eager to learn and flexible when circumstances change.
