騒音性難聴(NIHL)は、軍隊や消防士などの職業的に危険にさらされているサービスグループの間で非常に蔓延しており、障害により重大な医療負担が生じ、任務遂行や生活の質に悪影響を及ぼします。 騒音にさらされると、有毛細胞の損失を伴う永続的な閾値シフト (PTS) が発生したり、有毛細胞の損失が明らかではない一時的な閾値シフト (TTS) が発生したりすることがあります。 また、騒音への曝露は、シナプス要素と蝸牛神経終末の急速かつ永久的な喪失を引き起こし、不可逆的な聴覚障害やらせん神経節(SG)細胞体の長期的な変性を引き起こす可能性があります。
