- 50세 이상의 지역사회 거주 성인(남녀 비율이 대략 동일).
- 남성은 불임 상태이거나 연구 기간 동안 피임법을 사용하기로 동의해야 함.
- 여성은 폐경 후 상태여야 하며, 지난 5년 동안 월경이 없었음으로 정의됨(폐경이 골 흡수를 급격히 증가시키기 때문에 골 흡수 변화의 변동성을 줄이기 위함).
- 골감소증은 요추, 대퇴골 경부 또는 전체 고관절의 골밀도(BMD) T 점수가 -1 미만이거나 -2.5 초과인 것으로 정의됨.
- 사전 선별 면접에서 후보자는 검증된 짧은 설문지를 통해 산성 부하와 관련된 일반적인 식단을 보고해야 함.
- 추정 사구체 여과율(eGFR)은 45 ml/분 이상이어야 함.
- 참가자는 연구 기간 동안 운동 패턴이나 약물 사용을 변경하지 않기로 동의해야 함.
- 참가자는 연구 기간 동안 보충제 사용 패턴을 변경하지 않고 제산제를 사용하지 않기로 동의해야 함(대부분의 칼슘 보충제와 다른 제산제는 알칼리를 추가하기 때문).
- 참가자는 식습관을 변경하거나 체중을 의도적으로 변경하지 않기로 동의해야 함.

- 모든 척추 및 고관절 부위에서 정상 BMD T 점수, BMD T 점수가 -2.5 이하인 골다공증

- 만성 폐쇄성 폐질환(COPD)
- 천식
- 지난 달 메스꺼움/구토
- 연하 곤란
- 흡수 장애
- 염증성 장질환
- 만성 설사(매일 묽은 변을 보는 것으로 정의) 또는 변비(주당 ≤ 2회 배변)
- 인슐린이 필요한 당뇨병 또는 공복 혈장 포도당 >125 mg/dl
