Achtergrond: Psychische gezondheidsstoornissen (PH) blijven de grootste verbruiker van ziekenhuisbeddagen en staan in de top 10 van diagnoses voor Active Duty Service Members (ADSM) verloren dienstdagen en afspraakgebruik. Cognitieve therapieën (CT) zijn de evidence-based keuze voor PH-aandoeningen. Er is weinig bekend over de cognitieve inhoud van Military Identity (MI) en het potentieel voor het identificeren van specifieke cognitieve kwetsbaarheden en middelen die veel voorkomen in ADSM's. Het begrijpen van de rol van MI in algemene militaire PH-omstandigheden kan de ontwikkeling van nieuwe militair-specifieke klinische strategieën voor CT's ondersteunen.
Studiedoelstelling: Bevindingen valideren van een pilootstudie naar militaire identiteit (MI) waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van een zelfschemamodel om de belangrijkste cognitieve inhoud van MI te bepalen en om relaties tussen MI en psychologisch welzijn (PWB) te onderzoeken.
Specifieke doelstellingen:
Doel 1: Beschrijf de cognitieve kerninhoud van MI bij militairen in actieve dienst.
Doel 2: Onderzoek het effect van MI op responstijden voor informatieverwerking.
Doel 3: Onderzoek de relatie tussen MI en zelf-gepercipieerde scores voor psychisch welbevinden.
Opzet: Een beschrijvende cross-sectionele inhoudsanalyse met gemengde methoden en een informatieverwerkingsparadigma met vier groepen zullen worden gebruikt om een gestratificeerde steekproef van ADSM's over gezamenlijke diensten te onderzoeken (25% steekproef van elk leger, marine, luchtmacht, marine).
Methoden: Identiteitskenmerktaken met open en gesloten einde zullen worden gebruikt om MI-inhoud te verkennen, evenals een responstijdtaak met 60 attributen, samen met een demografische vragenlijst, opname van in-groep in zelfschaal en Ryff's PWB-schalen. Alle metingen worden verzameld via een geautomatiseerd softwareprogramma dat is ontwikkeld door Project Implicit van Harvard.
Verspreiding van resultaten: De resultaten van het onderzoek zullen worden verspreid via publicaties, poster- en/of podiumpresentaties op professionele jaarlijkse conferenties zoals de American Psychological Association (APA), Military Health Systems Research Symposium, Association of Military Surgeons United States (AMSUS), en Tri-Service Nursing Research Program (TSNRP). Manuscripten zullen ter publicatie worden voorgelegd aan geschikte tijdschriften zoals Militaire Psychologie, Militaire Gedragsgezondheid en Militaire Geneeskunde.

De opname van in-groep in de zelfschaal (IIS) is een meting van één item die gemakkelijk kan worden aangepast en snel kan worden uitgevoerd voor onderzoeken waarbij lidmaatschap van veel verschillende groepen betrokken is.
De schaal van 1 tot 7 wordt weergegeven door zeven paar cirkels die het niveau van identificatie met het leger vertegenwoordigen; deelnemers wordt gevraagd om het paar cirkels te kiezen dat hun eigen niveau van identificatie met het leger het beste weergeeft.
Het paar cirkels met het label "1" (geen overlap) vertegenwoordigt het laagste niveau van identificatie met het leger.
Het paar met het label "7" (bijna volledige overlap) vertegenwoordigt het hoogste niveau van identificatie met het leger.
De score vertegenwoordigt een zelfrapportage van het niveau van identificatie van een deelnemer met een groep, en is op zichzelf niet indicatief voor een beter of slechter resultaat.

De Closed-ended Identity Attribute Task (CIAT) biedt een lijst van 60 attributen die zijn gegenereerd door methoden die zijn vastgesteld in de sociaalpsychologische wetenschappen.
Met behulp van een 11-puntsschaal moet de deelnemer elk attribuut beoordelen op basis van: zelfbeschrijving (in hoeverre beschrijft dit attribuut mij werkelijk?), belang (hoe belangrijk is dit attribuut voor wie ik ben als militair lid?)

De Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-being (PWB) bestaat uit zes 9-item schalen (54 items in totaal) van psychisch welbevinden, geconstrueerd om de dimensies van autonomie, omgevingsbeheersing, persoonlijke groei, positieve relaties, doel in het leven en zelfacceptatie.
Deelnemers reageren op stellingen op een schaal van 1 (helemaal mee oneens) tot 6 (helemaal mee eens).
Scores van de 54 items worden opgeteld; hoe hoger de totaalscore = hoe hoger de PWB.
