Relationship Between Clinical Status and Nerve Conduction Test Findings in Patients With Unilateral Hemiplegia

28. juli 2026 oppdatert av: Baskent University

Prevalence of Peripheral Nerve Conduction Abnormalities and Their Association With Clinical Scores in Patients With Hemiplegia

Stroke-related hemiplegia may be accompanied by peripheral nerve conduction abnormalities, which may contribute to motor impairment and functional limitations. However, the frequency of these abnormalities and their relationship with clinical status have not been fully characterized. This single-center observational study aims to evaluate the frequency of peripheral nerve conduction abnormalities identified by nerve conduction studies in patients with unilateral hemiplegia and to examine their association with motor and functional clinical assessment scores. The findings may contribute to a better understanding of peripheral nerve involvement in stroke rehabilitation.

Studieoversikt

Detaljert beskrivelse

This is a single-center observational study designed to evaluate peripheral nerve conduction abnormalities in patients with unilateral hemiplegia following stroke. Participants undergo standardized nerve conduction studies together with routine clinical assessments, including validated measures of motor recovery and functional status. The study aims to describe the frequency of peripheral nerve conduction abnormalities within the study population and to examine their association with clinical assessment scores. The results may improve the understanding of peripheral nerve involvement in patients with hemiplegia and provide information that may be useful for rehabilitation practice.

Studiepopulasjon

Adults with unilateral hemiplegia secondary to ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke who were recruited from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at a single tertiary care center. All participants underwent standardized nerve conduction studies and clinical assessments according to the study protocol.

Beskrivelse

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults (≥18 years of age).
  • Unilateral hemiplegia secondary to ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, or intracranial hemorrhage.
  • Ability to undergo standardized nerve conduction studies and clinical assessments.
  • Provision of written informed consent.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Bilateral hemiplegia.
  • Hemiplegia secondary to benign or malignant intracranial tumors.
  • Upper or lower extremity fracture, amputation, skin lesions preventing electrophysiological testing, or diagnosed peripheral vascular disease.
  • Concomitant neurological disorders that may affect motor function or peripheral nerve conduction (e.g., Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, encephalitis).
  • Contraindications to nerve conduction studies (e.g., cardiac pacemaker or inability to safely undergo the examination).
  • Inability to cooperate with or tolerate nerve conduction studies.

Patients With Unilateral Post-Stroke Hemiplegia
Patients with unilateral post-stroke hemiplegia who underwent standardized nerve conduction studies and clinical assessments, including motor and functional outcome measures.
Standardized motor and sensory nerve conduction studies were performed to evaluate peripheral nerve conduction abnormalities in patients with unilateral post-stroke hemiplegia. The test was used as a diagnostic assessment and was not part of a therapeutic intervention.

Tidsramme
Association Between Peripheral Nerve Conduction Abnormalities and Clinical Assessment Scores
Tidsramme: Baseline
To evaluate the association between peripheral nerve conduction abnormalities identified by standardized nerve conduction studies and motor and functional outcome measures in patients with unilateral hemiplegia secondary to ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. Peripheral nerve conduction abnormalities identified by standardized nerve conduction studies will also be described.
