Basic Function:

Selling Thermo Fisher’s downstream chromatography products (POROS Chromatography and CaptureSelect Affinity resins and columns) into process development and clinical/commercial manufacturing groups within biopharma accounts. Maintain the present customer base while actively developing opportunities to build a strong pipeline of projects that will fuel future growth. Uses sales, product, and territory knowledge to work independently in most situations. Responsible for meeting sales goals for assigned territory.

Impact:

Successful sales performance directly contributes to achieving sales revenue targets; accurate forecasting through strong customer relationships permits accurate and timely production planning.

Territory: Mainly greater Cambridge, MA (95% of the time), also very limited trips to New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, and Rhode Island

Job Duties:

Meets or exceeds assigned sales quota for POROS and CaptureSelect by maintaining growth with existing customer base as well as actively searching for new business opportunities within the territory. Travels to customer sites for sales calls and presentations. Works closely with applications counterparts to move sale from awareness to evaluation/close. Participates in the seeding POROS and CaptureSelect products in new process accounts, while working closely with existing accounts to identify new process opportunities. Work closely with customers and product management to ensure that information and timing related to large production orders and product shipments are forecasted and communicated effectively. Maintains and strengthens sales skills through technical and sales training. Augments customer contact information and develops and updates sales activity/business plan. Maintains and constantly improves technical knowledge of the company’s chromatography product lines, company literature, and competitive products through attendance and participation in tradeshows and scientific conferences, contact with technical specialists, and self-study by reading trade journals, manuals, and books. Provides sales territory information, forecasts, reports and data by telephone, written, or electronic communication with manager and product manager. Regularly writes call reports, expense reports and updated sales activity and business plan. Collaborates with sales colleagues in the territory that represents Thermo’s other BioProduction products, including Gibco Cell Culture Products, Single Use Products, and PCR and Sequencing-based Analytics Products, to help grow Thermo’s overall Bioproduction business.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.

Education:

Requires knowledge and skills normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's or advanced degree (B.S, M.A, PhD.) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related subject area. At least 2 years of successful sales experience selling into the biopharmaceutical marketplace; experience in selling bulk chromatography media, filtration or consumables products related to the manufacturing of bio-therapeutics is a strong plus. Strong preference for an excellent understanding of chromatography and downstream purification in process development.

Business Acumen :

Effective sales strategies and negotiation techniques are needed to proactively seek out sales opportunities and respond to the needs of the customers and potential customers with innovative solutions. Effective territory and account management skills are critical to driving growth.

Other Knowledge:

Strong technical skills are required to discuss and support chromatography resins for biopharmaceutical process development and manufacturing groups. Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with accounts within the territory. Must have the capability to develop knowledge of accounts and key customers and to interpret customer's needs and identify solutions. Strong analytical skills are important to analyze territory sales data and technical information. Experience in performing independently and as part of a team.

Established sales history and relationships with the downstream process development group within key biopharmaceutical accounts in the aforementioned territory would be highly desirable.
