Bioinformatics QA Scientist

Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings (Covance)

Multiple locations

Our bioinformatics scientists use their years of academic research and industrial experience to develop sophisticated and specialized applications for our molecular and NGS assays. The quality assurance (QA) testing of those applications requires a strong bioinformatics background to develop the proper test cases and adequately vet the clinical accuracy of the tools. In addition, knowledge of Python and testing frameworks are required to develop and implement testing strategies which will cover functional, integration, and system-level validation. The successful candidate will use a methodical and detail-oriented approach to design test cases, identify software bugs, and verify fixes as well as engage in the full software development lifecycle from requirements gathering to post-deployment support, ensuring that all software meets or exceeds industry standards and user expectations. Finally, generating verification documentation and creating auditable work records will be needed.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, document, and maintain functional test cases and other test artifacts like test data, data validation, harness scripts, and automated scripts.
  • Execute and evaluate manual or automated test cases and report test results to ensure the software system’s robustness and stability.
  • Identify, isolate, and track bugs throughout testing.
  • Collaborate with the software development team to resolve issues.
  • Utilize Python for writing test scripts and automation frameworks, enhancing testing efficiency and coverage.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, including R&D scientists, to understand specific testing requirements related to bioinformatics applications, particularly those handling genomic and molecular data.
  • Assist in the development of testing strategies to effectively cover new product features, with a keen focus on scalability, reliability, and regulatory compliance in a clinical environment.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to improve product quality and reduce future test overhead.
  • Train and mentor junior QA testers in effective testing techniques and standards.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise in software testing methodologies and quality assurance practices, with a focus on bioinformatics applications.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills. Being familiar with Jira and Confluence is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Python for scripting and test automation. Familiarity with R, Selenium, and Behave/Cucumber is highly desirable.
  • Strong background in biology, genetics, or a closely related field, with a solid understanding of biological data, particularly genomic and molecular data.
  • Experience with test case development and the ability to document and troubleshoot errors effectively.
  • Knowledge of statistical tools and data analysis techniques as they apply to quality testing.
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Developed Tests (LDT) and the regulatory environment surrounding bioinformatics software in clinical settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed through technical proficiency, attention to detail, and a collaborative attitude.
  • Ability to use professional concepts to contribute to the development of company’s objectives, employing highly creative and effective ways to help produce quality software.
  • Exercises independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Capable of acting autonomously to determine methods and procedures on new or special assignments.
  • Communicates knowledge freely among the team.
  • Seeks out opportunities to learn.
