The Senior Director, Human Resources is a key role in our Microbiology Division (MBD). Reporting to the Vice President, Human Resources, you will be the primary business partner to MBD‘s Operations (Manufacturing) organization and will partner with the Vice President, Operations and their leadership team to develop and achieve strategic and operating plan objectives by building organizational capability, driving culture change and acquiring and developing talent.

You will work within a matrixed environment, engaging and aligning with global business leaders, local HR teams, and HR centers of excellence. To be successful, you will need to lead with Customer focus, whilst demonstrating leadership agility and pace across our complex and global footprint.

This role can be office-based at any of the following Thermo Fisher locations: Basingstoke (UK), Dartford (UK), East Grinstead (UK), Perth (UK), or Wesel (Germany).  There will be the flexibility to work from home 1 to 2 days per week.  In addition, regular travel to all of these sites, plus Vantaa (Finland), Lenexa (Kansas, USA), and other global MBD sites will be required – up to 20% of working time, including overnight stays.

Our Organisation:

The Microbiology Division is part our Specialty Diagnostics group and one of the Company’s global divisions. It is a world leading manufacturer of culture media and other microbiological diagnostic products used in clinical, food and pharmaceutical laboratories. The division has over 2400 employees across the Americas, Europe and Asia, generating approximately $650M revenue. Primary global sites are in Basingstoke, UK and Lenexa, Kansas USA with 10 other manufacturing sites across Europe, UK and Asia and multiple distribution centres, all part of a global supply chain that serves customers.

What will you do?

  • Develop HR strategy, solutions, initiatives and a strategic workforce plan that align to the business and functional strategy and objectives
  • Partner with business leadership to deliver productivity and profitability enhancement through business transformation and guide complex leadership and HR issues including organization assessment and design, talent development and engagement and all other areas which have the potential to create a competitive advantage for the business
  • Act as a catalyst for change; guide and direct organizational design and development solutions
  • Build organizational capability through collaborating, coaching, development and facilitation of the leadership team enhancing leadership capability, team effectiveness and cross-functional goal alignment
  • Facilitate organizational diagnosis and metrics to drive organizational effectiveness
  • Develop robust talent management plans and drive culture change initiatives to attract, retain, develop, and engage talent in critical roles
  • Counsel and/or coach leaders and their teams on employee relations issues including performance management, facilitation of formal/informal complaints to resolution, disciplinaries and/or terminations in line with local culture and legal environment
  • Lead HR processes and ensure their alignment to group, division and functional goals, considering both the short (AOP) and long term (STRAP), namely Human Resources Review (HRR), Performance Management and Development (PMD), Monthly (MBR) and Quarterly Business Reviews (QBR), Total Compensation Planning (TCP) and Employee Involvement Survey action planning (EIS) with strategic and operating goals
  • Leverage and collaborate with one HR team globally to deliver on all HR services, site talent plans and change projects for the 1500 colleagues and 13 sites spread globally.
  • Partner with HR colleagues in North America, EMEA, APJ and China and leadership across the Operations organizations to drive business results

Who we are looking for:

  • University degree required, preferably in human resources or a business-related field
  • Prior HR experience supporting a global Operations function within a multinational company and a business with global footprint
  • Ability to drive successful cross-functional and cross business unit initiatives, setting direction, engaging multiple parties, delivering outcomes, and communicating to key partners
  • Proven success translating business strategies into organizational and HR strategies & actions. Track record of positive results and an ability to show how these programs and policies have contributed to the growth and bottom-line profitability of an organization while enhancing or driving cultural change
  • Senior level HR Experience as a strategic business partner with credibility as a trusted advisor and confidant to people leaders on business issues and business strategy with the ability to link human resources as a driver of business performance
  • People management experience (both direct and indirect)
  • A complete understanding of and hands on exposure to the full mix of HR functions in a global, fast-paced and matrix environment
  • Experience with Process Improvement approaches (Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Practical Process Improvement, etc.) and Project management with ability to balance short term delivery along with longer-term strategic landmarks
  • Strong communication, facilitation and collaboration skills with audiences at all levels
  • Effective negotiating skills with proven track record to influence without direct authority
  • Self-motivated; bias for action
  • Willing and able to travel internationally up to 20% of working time, including overnight stays
  • Advanced level of English
