米国の多くの医療施設は、動物介在活動 (AAA) または動物介在療法 (AAT) のいずれかに分類できる動物介在介入 (AAI) にセラピー犬を採用しています。 AAA プログラムはよりカジュアルで、通常は目標指向ではなく、人間と動物の関わりに重点を置く傾向があります。 AAT プログラムは、理学療法士、心理療法士、作業療法士、または言語療法士との定義された治療セッションを使用して、特定の治療目標をターゲットにした正式な介入です。 理学療法士による AAT プログラムは、脳卒中 (生涯発生率 14.5 ~ 16.1%)、パーキンソン病 (生涯発生率 1.3 ~ 2%)、またはその他の神経損傷/障害により入院した患者など、運動機能障害のある患者に焦点を当てています。
