Our Corporate team in Spain is growing, and we are looking for a Manager (Health and Safety) who will be working at our Madrid office.

A day in the Life:

• Manages local Facilities team, which may include interviewing and selection, job description preparation, professional development, goal setting, performance management, behavioral and technical coaching and mentoring, employee counseling, and separations. Approves courses of action on salary administration, hiring, corrective action, and terminations. Reviews and approves time records, expense reports, requests for leave, and overtime. Promotes all aspects of PPD Equal Employment Opportunity policy and Affirmative Action Plan. Assures department adherence to good ethical and regulatory standards.

• Oversees facilities activities (vendor management, office utilization, PO approvals)

• Ensures that all licensing, permitting, or other environmental, health or safety requirements are met and takes appropriate actions to ensure that any noncompliance issues are resolved. Updates site management on new or changed regulations in a timely manner. Makes recommendations to site management on feasible solutions and alternatives for compliance with these regulations.

• Develops and updates all health and safety related mandated procedures. In addition, ensures that procedures meet corporate and local requirements

• Ensures the safe removal and disposal of hazardous/biological waste from facility on a regular basis. Maintains and monitors waste manifest system. Completes reporting forms for all required regulatory agencies.

• Develops and conducts employee health and safety training program and refresher courses.

• Conducts regular walk-downs and yearly self-assessments of assigned facilities and conducts employee health hazard exposure monitoring to ensure OSHA compliance.

• Partners to provide information on Worker’s Compensation related claims to insurance company. Assists in conducting work-related injury/illness investigation. Oversees all ergonomic related issues and makes recommendations as appropriate.

• May lead a Health & Safety committees, maintain controlled substance program or evaluate/maintain all safety equipment, coordinate fire drills and/or work with assigned site on CAP inspections or other audit related inspections (OSHA). Policy & Strategy Administers and executes policies, processes, and procedures that affect subordinate employees and the workflow of the unit. Requires full knowledge of own area of functional responsibility. Freedom to Act Assignments are task or activity oriented. Work is reviewed for soundness of judgment and overall quality and efficiency. A portion of the time may be spent performing individual tasks. Liaison Interacts internally primarily with subordinates and other supervisors. External interaction is typically with suppliers, vendors, and / or primary customers. Primary purpose of liaison is information sharing and basic problem resolution.

Keys to Success:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification
  • Master’s degree in: Health and Safety and Safety at Work, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics
  • Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 3 to 5 years).
  • 3+ years of leadership responsibility

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and practices  
  • Knowledge of air monitoring, ergonomics, fire alarm systems
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to provide effective training
  • Good problem solving and soft skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good judgement and business acumen
  • Good computer skills
