  Job Summary

BASIC SUMMARY:  

Independently perform moderate necropsy functions. Prepare and review documentation and perform quality control review of study data. Provide expertise in the area of necropsy to other staff and visitors as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Independently perform specialized necropsy procedures (collection of tissues for special procedures, perfusion fixation, fetal evaluation, specialized dissection, neurodissection, photography, etc.).

Learn/know correct anatomic terms.

Prepare responses to audits, deviations, and other documentation from internal and external reviews of data.

Act as lead technician on multiple studies of moderate complexity adhering to deliverable dates. 

Independently perform moderate necropsy procedures (dissection, tissue collection and sample collection, etc.)

Review laboratory documents for accuracy, completeness and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), and study specific requirements.

May serve as a source for pathology related study information, which may require attendance of study meetings and/or conduct of meetings.

Prepare study specific procedure documentation.

Perform method development experiments, trouble shoot technical challenges, and/or offer solutions to technical challenges.

Ensure raw data records are accurate, complete, and in appropriate order, and meet protocol specifications and/or GLP requirements.  Review documentation of functions performed as part of quality control requirements.  Prepare data forms for routine and specialized study procedures.  

Collect and record research data and biological specimens in compliance with Good Laboratory Practices Regulations (GLP), study protocols and SOP’s.

Perform all other related duties as assigned.

  Job Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required.  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in a biological science preferred.

Experience:  1+ years of Necropsy laboratory experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Certification/Licensure:  AALAS certification at the ALAT level preferred.

Other:  Demonstrate technical and analytical skills.  Effective communication and retention skills.  Ability to handle a variety of laboratory animals.  Must be able to perform effectively as a team member, accurately record data, follow verbal and written instructions, maintain a positive work atmosphere, communicate effectively, and interact in a professional manner with management, coworkers, and sponsors.  Proficient  in the operation of data collection equipment.  Understanding of basic, and moderate study design and protocols.  Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.  Experience with computer software programs is preferred. Computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.  Placement at this level requires successful completion/competency of the required tasks of the positions preceding this level and continued ability to perform those tasks are required.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employees must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold heavy objects up to and including 50 pounds; this includes work materials, equipment, and/or animals.

Must be able to perform laboratory procedures, which require, talking, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods of time, entering data into a computer, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment (PPE) according to OSHA regulations and company standards.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Works in a research laboratory environment, which requires use of sharp objects, working around mechanical parts, working with or near known or unknown toxic or caustic chemicals and/or biological hazards, exposure to fumes and airborne particles, working at noise levels ranging from quiet to moderately noisy.

Comments:

May occasionally work weekend/holidays and/or rotating on-call schedule.
