수술 중 폐 흡인은 사망을 유발하고 이환율로 이어질 수 있습니다. 또한 흡인률의 신뢰할 수 있는 추정치는 불확실합니다. 부분적으로 이러한 모호성은 예상 데이터의 부족과 관련이 있습니다. 관련 연구는 후향적 차트 검토 또는 자발적 보고 데이터베이스의 결과입니다. 또한 흡인 진단이 부정확할 수 있습니다. 기관-기관지 나무에서 담즙 또는 입자상 물질의 흡인이 있거나 내시경적 시각화가 있을 때 소견이 확실합니다. 그러나 수술 중 또는 수술 후 새로운 흉부 X-선 침윤물이 발생하고 수반되는 빈호흡, 저산소증, 천명 또는 인공호흡기 기도압의 변화가 있는 경우 진단은 추정적입니다.
전신 기관내 마취를 받는 대부분의 환자는 앙와위 또는 수평 자세입니다. 그러나 문헌의 증거에 따르면 기계 환기를 받는 환자의 앙와위 자세는 흡인 및 인공호흡기 관련 폐렴(VAP)의 위험이 있습니다. 중환자실(ICU) 기계 환기 중에 의료 개선 연구소는 폐 흡인 및 VAP를 방지하기 위해 침대 머리 부분을 높일 것을 권장합니다. 다른 조사에서는 수평 배치와 수술 중 흡인 사이에 심오한 관계가 있음을 보여주었습니다. 커프가 있는 기관내 튜브가 있음에도 불구하고 흡인이 일어난다는 실질적인 수술실, ICU 및 동물 조사 증거가 있습니다. 마찬가지로, 이 그룹의 이전 작업에서는 수술 전후 저산소혈증 비율이 30%로 나타났으며, 이는 수평 위치와 상당한 관련이 있습니다. 수술 후 입원 기간은 저산소혈증이 없는 경우에 비해 저산소혈증이 있는 경우 2일이 더 길었고(p<0.0001), 이는 연구 2개월 동안 총 300일의 추가 일수를 나타냅니다.
