March 6, 2026 updated by: Begüm Serim Yildız, TED University

Development of a Self-care Psychoeducation Program for Trauma Counselors

This qualitative study aimed to develop and pilot a structured self-care psychoeducation program for in-service trauma counselors. The program addressed emotional, cognitive, physical, spiritual, relational, and professional dimensions of self-care. In the first phase, a needs analysis with 11 counselors informed program development. In the second phase, 17 counselors participated in a seven-session pilot. Data collected via semi-structured interviews and session journals were analyzed using content analysis.

Arms and Interventions

Participant Group / Arm
Intervention / Treatment
Experimental: Self-Care Psychoeducation Program for Trauma Counselors
  1. Introduction to self-care Taking basic steps to create group dynamics and defining self-care and its dimensions
  2. Cognitive and Emotional Self-Care Strategies Recognizing the importance of cognitive and emotional self-care strategies and creating a self-care plan
  3. Physical Self-Care Strategies Identifying the importance of physical self-care strategies
  4. Spiritual Self-Care Strategies Recognizing the significance of spiritual self-care strategies
  5. Relational Self-Care Strategies Identifying the importance of relational self-care strategies
  6. Professional Self-Care Strategies Recognizing the significance of professional self-care strategies
  7. Consolidation Evaluating the whole self-care strategies training process
The results of the needs analysis and findings from relevant literature were used to develop the scope and content of the psychoeducation program. For that purpose; (a) learning outcomes were developed and later grouped under categories, (b) number of sessions were defined, (c) sequence of sessions, their content, materials and activities, method of delivery, and end-session evaluation practices were identified. External expertise was recruited to provide an early assessment of the program for its compliance with the intended goal of reviewing self-care skills with trauma counselors and its effectiveness regarding methods and activities, materials, and evaluation practices selected. In its final form, the psychoeducation program consisted of seven sessions, in each of which the instructor led the introduction and presentation in the first part, followed by participant-centered hands-on activities and session evaluations in the second part.

Primary Outcome Measures

Outcome Measure
Measure Description
Time Frame
Pre-Test - Self-Care Definition & Strategies (Interview)
Time Frame: Week 1 (Baseline)
Participants' definition of self-care and number of self-care strategies used, as assessed through researcher-developed semi-structured interviews. Interviews will be analyzed qualitatively to identify participants' understanding of self-care and the number of self-care strategies reported.
Week 1 (Baseline)
Post-Test - Self-Care Definition & Strategies (Interview)
Time Frame: Week 7 (Post-Test)
Participants' definition of self-care and number of self-care strategies used, as assessed through researcher-developed semi-structured interviews. Interviews will be analyzed qualitatively to identify participants' understanding of self-care and the number of self-care strategies reported. Changes from Week 1 will be compared to evaluate self-care integration.
Week 7 (Post-Test)

Secondary Outcome Measures

Outcome Measure
Measure Description
Time Frame
Cognitive and Emotional Self-Care Strategies (Journal)
Time Frame: Week 2
Participants' cognitive and emotional self-care strategies, as assessed through weekly reflective journal entries. Journal entries will be analyzed qualitatively to identify emerging themes in cognitive and emotional self-care practices.
Week 2
Physical Self-Care Strategies (Journal)
Time Frame: Week 3
Participants' physical self-care strategies, as assessed through weekly reflective journal entries. Journal entries will be analyzed qualitatively to identify themes in physical self-care practices.
Week 3
Spiritual Self-Care Strategies (Journal)
Time Frame: Week 4
Participants' spiritual self-care strategies, as assessed through weekly reflective journal entries. Journal entries will be analyzed qualitatively to identify themes in spiritual self-care practices.
Week 4
Relational Self-Care Strategies (Journal)
Time Frame: Week 5
Participants' relational self-care strategies, as assessed through weekly reflective journal entries. Journal entries will be analyzed qualitatively to identify themes in relational self-care practices.
Week 5
Professional Self-Care Strategies (Journal)
Time Frame: Week 6
Participants' professional self-care strategies, as assessed through weekly reflective journal entries. Journal entries will be analyzed qualitatively to identify themes in professional self-care practices.
