El Estudio de cohorte multicéntrico sobre el SIDA (MACS) brinda información importante sobre la naturaleza cambiante de la progresión de la enfermedad mediada por el VIH, el impacto del tratamiento antirretroviral, la naturaleza de la patogenia del VIH y los factores genéticos virales y del huésped. Este estudio también evaluará los patrones a largo plazo del uso de la terapia y los comportamientos de riesgo.
Los pacientes tendrán visitas de estudio cada 6 meses. Las visitas incluirán entrevistas, recolección de muestras y un examen físico.

Descripción
Criterios de inclusión:
- VIH negativo, o
- VIH positivo y sin antecedentes o uso actual de terapia antirretroviral altamente activa (HAART), o
- Receptor de HAART VIH positivo con documentación de inicio de HAART, sin diagnóstico de SIDA antes del inicio de HAART, y un recuento de células CD4 y medición de ARN de VIH-1 dentro de los 6 meses anteriores al primer uso de HAART.
- Relaciones sexuales con hombres o al menos 5 parejas masculinas o femeninas en los 5 años anteriores a la inscripción.
Criterio de exclusión:
- Uso de drogas inyectables dentro de 1 año de la inscripción.
- Infección por VIH adquirida perinatalmente.
