約 1,100 万人のアメリカ人が、眼鏡やコンタクト レンズで矯正できる近視を持っています。 これらの人々の中には、角膜の曲率を平らにする手術によって近視を矯正または軽減することを目的とした手術である放射状角膜切開術 (RK) の候補になる人もいます。
角膜切開術は、1800 年代後半にヨーロッパと米国の外科医によって最初に行われました。手術の基本的な光学的および機械的原理は、1940 年代と 1950 年代に日本の医師である T. Sato と K. 435 人の患者と 99 人のパイロット患者を対象とした放射状角膜切開術研究の前向き評価は、放射状角膜切開術の 1 つの技術の短期および長期の安全性と有効性を評価するために設計された臨床試験でした。 この手順は、手術前後の患者の屈折異常と未矯正視力を比較することによって評価されました。 より近視眼の方が先に手術を受けました。 患者は、2 つ目の眼の手術を受けるまで 1 年間待つ必要がありました。
