小児の肥満は米国における重大な公衆衛生問題です。
小児肥満に寄与することが知られている要因の 1 つは過剰摂取です。
重要なのは、体重増加に関連する過剰摂取は必ずしも空腹感によって引き起こされるわけではないということです。
たとえば、環境的な食べ物の合図は脳の報酬領域を刺激し、子供が満腹になるまで食べた後でも過食につながります。
このタイプの合図による食事は、食べ物の合図に対する注意の増加と関連しています。子どもが食べ物のヒント(食品の広告など)を見るのに費やす時間は、カロリー摂取量の増加と関連しています。
しかし、環境的な食物の合図に対する個人の感受性は依然として不明です。
複数の電子メディアソースに同時に注目するメディアマルチタスクの普及が、環境中の末梢の食べ物の手がかりへの注意を高め、それによって肥満の発症に重要な役割を果たすと提案されています。
マルチタスクは、子供たちに絶え間ないタスクの切り替えを教え、その結果、その多くが潜在的に有害である(過食を促進するなど)周辺信号に対する反応性を高めるのではないかという仮説が立てられています。
最も重要な仮説は、メディアのマルチタスクによって、環境の合図への注意を制御する脳の注意ネットワークが変化するというものです。
したがって、メディアのマルチタスクを頻繁に行う子供は、食べ物の合図に特に敏感であり、その結果、合図による食事の増加につながります。
また、注意修正トレーニングは、注意ネットワークの習熟度を高めることにより、マルチタスクによって引き起こされる有害な注意処理に対する保護効果を提供できると予測されています。
これらの仮説は、メディアのマルチタスク、食べ物の合図への注意、および合図された食事の間の経路を評価することによって検証されます。
また、食事の合図への注意を減らすように設計された自宅での注意修正訓練介入を試行することで、この経路に介入できるかどうかも検討されます。
この研究が、注意ネットワークを訓練し、過食の既知の原因である周囲の食べ物の手がかりに子供たちが影響されにくくする、低コストでスケーラブルなツールの開発につながると私たちは信じています。
たとえば、子供たちに注意修正介入タスクを定期的に練習させると(ユーザーフレンドリーなコンピュータ ゲームや携帯電話/タブレット アプリを通じて実行できます)、メディア マルチタスクによる注意力への悪影響を相殺できる可能性があります。

参加者がコンピュータでメディア ゲームをプレイしている間に、視線追跡を使用して、静止した食べ物の合図を見るのに費やした時間を測定します。
餌の合図を見るのに費やした時間は、その餌の合図にどれだけの注意が払われたかを測定します。
見ている時間が長いほど、注目度は高くなります。

参加者は、短い形式のメディア マルチタスク指数を使用して、通常のメディア マルチタスクについて報告しました。
この指数は、1) テレビや映画を見る、2) ビデオ ゲームをする、3) 本や雑誌を読む (学校で割り当てられていない)、4) 宿題をするという 4 つの主要な活動における、他の印刷メディアやデジタル メディアとのメディアのマルチタスクについて質問します。
参加者は、アクティビティごとに、他のアクティビティに参加してマルチタスクを行う頻度を、5 段階のリッカート スケール (つまり、0=まったくしない、1=まれに、2=時々、3=頻繁に、4=常に) を使用して報告しました。
通常のメディア マルチタスク スコアは、リッカート応答の平均を取ることによって計算されました。
スコアの範囲は 0 から 4 で、スコアが高いほど、自己申告による通常のメディアのマルチタスク処理が高いことを示します。
