Media Multitasking en cued overeten: het pad beoordelen en een interventie besturen met behulp van een aandachtsnetwerkraamwerk
Obesitas bij kinderen is een kritiek probleem voor de volksgezondheid in de Verenigde Staten.
Een factor waarvan bekend is dat deze bijdraagt aan obesitas bij kinderen, is overmatige consumptie.
Belangrijk is dat overconsumptie in verband met gewichtstoename niet noodzakelijkerwijs wordt veroorzaakt door honger.
Bijvoorbeeld, omgevingsvoedselsignalen stimuleren hersenbeloningsgebieden en leiden tot overeten, zelfs nadat een kind tot verzadiging heeft gegeten.
Dit type cued-eten wordt geassocieerd met meer aandacht voor voedselcues; de hoeveelheid tijd die een kind besteedt aan het kijken naar voedselaanwijzingen (bijvoorbeeld voedselreclame) wordt in verband gebracht met een verhoogde calorie-inname.
De individuele gevoeligheid voor omgevingsvoedselsignalen blijft echter onbekend.
Aangenomen wordt dat de heersende praktijk van multitasking in de media - het gelijktijdig bijwonen van meerdere elektronische mediabronnen - de aandacht vergroot voor perifere voedselsignalen in de omgeving en daardoor een belangrijke rol speelt bij de ontwikkeling van obesitas.
Er wordt verondersteld dat multitasking kinderen leert om constant van taak te wisselen, waardoor ze beter reageren op perifere signalen, waarvan er vele potentieel schadelijk zijn (zoals signalen die overeten bevorderen).
De overkoepelende hypothese is dat mediamultitasking de aandachtsnetwerken van de hersenen verandert die de aandacht op omgevingssignalen sturen.
Kinderen met veel media-multitasking zijn daarom bijzonder gevoelig voor voedselaanwijzingen, wat leidt tot meer gericht eten.
Er wordt ook voorspeld dat aandachtsaanpassingstraining een beschermend effect kan hebben tegen schadelijke aandachtsverwerking veroorzaakt door multi-tasking, door de vaardigheid van de aandachtsnetwerken te vergroten.
Deze hypothesen zullen worden getest door het pad tussen media-multitasking, aandacht voor voedselsignalen en cued-eten te beoordelen.
Er zal ook worden onderzocht of het mogelijk is om op dit pad in te grijpen door een attentie-aanpassingstrainingsinterventie thuis te testen die is ontworpen om de aandacht voor voedselsignalen te verminderen.
Het is onze overtuiging dat dit onderzoek zal leiden tot de ontwikkeling van goedkope, schaalbare hulpmiddelen die aandachtsnetwerken kunnen trainen, zodat kinderen minder worden beïnvloed door perifere voedselsignalen, een bekende oorzaak van overeten.
Als kinderen bijvoorbeeld regelmatig interventietaken voor aandachtsverandering laten oefenen (wat kan worden bereikt door middel van gebruiksvriendelijke computerspellen of mobiele telefoon-/tablet-apps), kunnen de negatieve aandachtseffecten van multitasking in de media worden gecompenseerd.

Deelnemers rapporteerden over hun gebruikelijke media-multitasking met behulp van de verkorte media-multitasking-index.
Deze index vraagt naar mediamultitasking met andere gedrukte en digitale media tijdens vier primaire activiteiten: 1) televisie of films kijken, 2) videogames spelen, 3) boeken of tijdschriften lezen (niet toegewezen voor school) en 4) huiswerk maken.
Voor elke activiteit rapporteerden deelnemers de frequentie waarmee ze multitaskten door deel te nemen aan de andere activiteiten door een 5-punts Likert-schaal te gebruiken (d.w.z. 0=nooit, 1=zelden, 2=soms, 3=vaak, 4=altijd).
Een gebruikelijke mediamultitasking-score werd berekend door het gemiddelde van de Likert-respons te nemen.
De score varieert van 0 tot 4, waarbij een hogere score wijst op meer zelfgerapporteerde gebruikelijke mediamultitasking.
