Er werd gebruik gemaakt van een gerandomiseerde, gecontroleerde, enkelblinde cross-over studieopzet, en de drie onafhankelijke variabelen waren spinale manipulatieve therapie (SMT), een 10 seconden plantaire flexie maximale vrijwillige isometrische contractie (MVIC) of SMT direct voorafgaand aan de MVIC (SMT + MVIC) . De behandelingsvolgorde werd gerandomiseerd voor elk van de drie sessies voorafgaand aan het Hmax/Mmax-stimulatieprotocol van de scheenbeenzenuw.
Elk van de vier afhankelijke variabelen werd opgeroepen tijdens het H-reflexstimulatieprotocol van de scheenbeenzenuw aan het einde van elke sessie, en omvatte de Hmax/Mmax-verhouding (%) van de gastrocnemius- en soleusspieren en de isometrische spierkracht die optreedt bij Hmax en bij Mmax. Hmax, de hoogste H-reflexamplitude, is een indicatie van de grootst mogelijke reflexactivatie; als zodanig is het een schatting van het aantal motorneuronen dat een proefpersoon in een bepaalde toestand kan activeren. Verdere verhogingen van de stimulatie-intensiteit zorgen ervoor dat de daaropvolgende M-golf zijn hoogste amplitude, Mmax, bereikt. Mmax is een samengesteld spieractiepotentieel (CMAP) dat staat voor volledige spieractivering. Specifiek voor het huidige onderzoek duidde Mmax op activatie van het totale volume van de gastrocnemius/soleus motorneuron (MN) pool.
Gegeven dat Hmax een gevolgtrekking is van het aantal MN's dat wordt gerekruteerd, en Mmax de gehele pool van motorneuronen vormt, kan het deel van de gehele MN-pool dat kan worden gerekruteerd, worden geschat met de Hmax/Mmax-verhouding. De Hmax/Mmax-verhouding werd bepaald door deling van de EMG-piek-tot-piek-amplitudes (mV) opgewekt bij Hmax door de voorafgaande Mmax EMG-piek-tot-piek-amplitudes. Verschillen in elk van de vier afhankelijke variabelen (Hmax/Mmax-ratio's van de gastrocnemius en soleus en de piektwitch-momenten opgewekt bij Hmax en Mmax) na elke behandelingsvorm van SMT, MVIC of SMT+MVIC afgegeven tijdens de drie gegevensverzamelingssessies op drie afzonderlijke dagen werden bepaald met een ANOVA in twee richtingen (behandeling x tijdstip) met herhaalde metingen. Procentuele veranderingen ten opzichte van de uitgangswaarde werden ook berekend voor elk van de afhankelijke variabelen, en hetzelfde type ANOVA werd gebruikt om verschillen in de effecten binnen de proefpersoon van elke behandeling te bepalen.

Inclusiecriteria:
- Ten minste één jaar ervaring met weerstandstraining en huidige voltooiing van ten minste drie trainingssessies per week
- Mannen moesten een minimale belasting van 1,5 x het lichaamsgewicht kunnen backsquaten
- Vrouwtjes moesten 1 x lichaamsgewicht kunnen backsquatten
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Pijn in de onderrug, buik of benen en/of operaties die in deze regio's worden uitgevoerd
