この研究は、スリランカで口腔がん治療を提供する3つの三次医療施設で行われた。コロンボの国立歯科病院の口腔顎顔面病棟(教育)。カラピティヤのコロンボ南(教育)病院の口腔顎顔面病棟。そして国立がん研究所マハラガマ(アペクシャ病院)の腫瘍外科病棟。
参加者 研究の参加者は、確定診断が患者に伝えられており、心理的苦痛を抱えている(シンハラ語版の苦痛温度計によるスクリーニング後のスコアが 4 以上)口腔がん患者でした。最初の治療法として手術を待っている。既婚で子供がおり、その中にはシンハラ語でのコミュニケーション能力と読み書き能力を持つ家族介護者が少なくとも 1 人含まれています。 除外基準は、再発性口腔癌であった。正式な精神医学的診断。早期緩和ケア介入を受けている、または受けたことがある。 アクセス可能な公衆衛生看護師の有無に基づいて、彼らを 55 人の対照群と 55 人の症例に分けました。

早期緩和ケア介入パッケージは、複雑な介入の開発のために英国医学研究評議会によって提供されたガイドラインに従って開発されました。
口腔がん患者に対する早期緩和ケア介入には 6 つの要素がありました: 1) 情報の提供、2) 急性および機能的問題への対処、3) 栄養ケア、4) 心理的サポート、5) マインドフルネス療法、6) 経済的手当の調整。
