구강 노출 전 예방법(PrEP)은 남성과 성관계를 가진 고위험 남성, 이성애 활동이 활발한 여성 및 남성, 주사 약물 사용자의 HIV 감염을 줄이는 데 효과적인 것으로 입증되었습니다. 2012년 FDA의 승인과 질병 통제 예방 센터(CDC)의 임상 지침 개발에도 불구하고 PrEP 활용은 제한적이었습니다.
