Fiskeoljer har mange beviste fordeler for et bredt spekter av kliniske arenaer som iskemisk hjertesykdom, revmatoid artritt og inflammatorisk tarmsykdom.
Nyere forskning har beskrevet de gunstige effektene av intravenøse fiskeoljer for kirurgiske pasienter, som redusert sykehusopphold, redusert re-operasjonsrate og redusert krav til intravenøs antibiotika. Disse skyldes delvis de anti-inflammatoriske effektene av fiskeoljer.
Det er bevis på at fiskeoljer også er effektive mot kreft, store befolkningsstudier indikerer at dietter rik på omega-3 er assosiert med lavere forekomst av kreft, og in vitro- og dyrestudier viser antitumoreffekter av fiskeoljer.
- Fiskeoljer hemmer veksten av forskjellige humane kreftcellelinjer

- Fiskeolje har også vist seg å redusere forekomsten av levermetastaser i eksperimentelt indusert ductal pancreacancer hos rotter etter 30 ukers oral behandling med omega-3-supplert diett.
- Lungekreft xenografts hos dyr fôret med fiskeolje viste signifikant økt tumorregresjon som respons på doksorubicin sammenlignet med de som ble fôret med omega-3.
Denne studien tar sikte på å vurdere effekten av omega-3 FA på hepatiske kolorektale metastaser i en pilotstudie. 20 pasienter vil bli valgt ut til denne pilotstudien med potensielt resektable levermetastaser i kolorektale adenokarsinom. 10 pasienter vil motta total parenteral ernæring (TPN) uten fiskeoljer (kontroller), 10 vil motta fiskeolje som inneholder lipidemulsjon i sin TPN.
Endringer i tumorangiogenese (økt angiogenese er assosiert med dårligere prognose ved levermetastaser i kolorektal) vil bli undersøkt ved bruk av digital kontrastforsterket MR-skanning, og markører for angiogenese vil bli undersøkt i blod og resekerte tumorprøver fra pasientene.
Det er en randomisert kontrollert dobbeltblind studie.

Beskrivelse
Inklusjonskriterier:
- I alderen 18-80 år
- Kunne gi informert skriftlig samtykke
- Diagnose av respektable hepatiske kolorektale metastaser på radiologiske og laparoskopiske utseende
Ekskluderingskriterier:
- Pasienter som allerede tar fiskeoljetilskudd
- Overfølsomhet overfor fiske-, egg- eller soyaprotein, eller overfor noen av de aktive stoffene eller ingrediensene i lipidemulsjonen
- Hyperlipidemi
- Alvorlige blodkoagulasjonsforstyrrelser
- Alvorlig nyresvikt (kreatinin >200)
- Eventuelle generelle kontraindikasjoner for infusjonsbehandling - lungeødem, hyperhydrering, dekompensert hjerteinsuffisiens
- Eventuelle ustabile medisinske tilstander - ukontrollert diabetes mellitus, akutt hjerteinfarkt, hjerneslag, embolisk sykdom, metabolsk acidose, sepsis, pankreatitt
- Pasienter som gjennomgår konvensjonell neo-adjuvant kjemoterapi.
