Os óleos de peixe têm muitos benefícios comprovados para uma ampla gama de arenas clínicas, como doença cardíaca isquêmica, artrite reumatóide e doença inflamatória intestinal.
Pesquisas recentes descreveram os efeitos benéficos dos óleos de peixe intravenosos para pacientes cirúrgicos, como redução da permanência hospitalar, redução da taxa de reoperação e redução da necessidade de antibióticos intravenosos. Estes são em parte devido aos efeitos anti-inflamatórios dos óleos de peixe.
Há evidências de que os óleos de peixe também são eficazes contra o câncer, grandes estudos populacionais indicam que dietas ricas em ômega-3 estão associadas a uma menor incidência de câncer e estudos in vitro e em animais demonstram os efeitos antitumorais dos óleos de peixe
- Os óleos de peixe inibem o crescimento de diferentes linhagens de células cancerígenas humanas
- Eles agem especificamente apenas nas células tumorais e não prejudicam a função das células normais
- EPA e DHA inibem o crescimento de linhas celulares de câncer humano e aumentam a apoptose.
- Óleo de peixe induz apoptose em linhas celulares de câncer colorretal humano in vitro após 48 horas de incubação

- Foi demonstrado que o óleo de peixe aumenta a sensibilidade das linhas celulares de adenocarcinoma colorretal à radioterapia
- O óleo de peixe também demonstrou reduzir a incidência de metástases hepáticas no câncer pancreático ductal induzido experimentalmente em ratos após 30 semanas de tratamento oral com uma dieta suplementada com ômega-3.
- Os xenoenxertos de câncer de pulmão em animais alimentados com óleo de peixe mostraram regressão tumoral significativamente aumentada em resposta à doxorrubicina em comparação com aqueles alimentados com ômega-3.
Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito do ômega-3 FA sobre metástases hepáticas colorretais em um estudo piloto. 20 pacientes serão selecionados para este estudo piloto com metástases de adenocarcinoma hepático potencialmente ressecáveis. 10 pacientes receberão nutrição parenteral total (TPN) sem óleos de peixe (controles), 10 receberão óleo de peixe contendo emulsão lipídica em seu NPT.
Alterações na angiogênese tumoral (o aumento da angiogênese está associado a um pior prognóstico em metástases colorretais hepáticas) serão investigadas usando ressonância magnética com contraste digital, e marcadores de angiogênese serão investigados no sangue e em amostras tumorais ressecadas dos pacientes.
É um estudo randomizado controlado duplo-cego.

Critério de inclusão:
- 18-80 anos
- Capaz de dar consentimento informado por escrito
- Diagnóstico de metástases colorretais hepáticas respeitáveis em aspectos radiológicos e laparoscópicos
Critério de exclusão:
- Pacientes que já tomam suplementos de óleo de peixe
- Hipersensibilidade às proteínas de peixe, ovo ou soja, ou a qualquer uma das substâncias ativas ou constituintes da emulsão lipídica
- Hiperlipidemia
- Distúrbios graves da coagulação sanguínea
- Insuficiência renal grave (Creatinina >200)
- Quaisquer contra-indicações gerais à terapia de infusão - edema pulmonar, hiperidratação, insuficiência cardíaca descompensada
- Quaisquer condições médicas instáveis - diabetes mellitus não controlada, infarto agudo do miocárdio, acidente vascular cerebral, doença embólica, acidose metabólica, sepse, pancreatite
- Pacientes submetidos à quimioterapia neoadjuvante convencional.
