За последние сорок лет эпидемиологические исследования внесли фундаментальный вклад в изучение этиологии и естественного течения хронических заболеваний — сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний, диабета и рака. Результаты эпидемиологических исследований послужили практической основой для разработки программ профилактики и контроля для улучшения образа жизни и контроля высокого кровяного давления с помощью лекарств, когда это показано. Проект по выявлению сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний в Чикаго: с осени 1967 по начало 1973 года были проверены сотрудники 85 фирм в районе Большого Чикаго.
