De combinatie van alcoholgebruik en negatieve emotionele toestanden is een bijzonder giftige combinatie voor het risico op zelfmoord. De huidige studie onderzoekt veranderingen in alcohol-/drugsgebruik/misbruik en depressie naarmate veteranen verder overgaan naar hun post-legeromgeving en biedt een gepersonaliseerde, op internet gebaseerde korte interventie bedoeld om alcoholmisbruik en depressie in deze populatie te voorkomen/verminderen.
De doelstellingen van de studie zijn het empirisch kwantificeren van de vorm van veranderingen die optreden met betrekking tot alcoholgebruik en depressie als veteranen hun tweede jaar na het leger ingaan; om stabiele individuele risicofactoren (bijvoorbeeld persoonlijkheid, militaire ervaringen) en dynamische risicofactoren (bijvoorbeeld veranderingen in stressoren en normatieve contexten in de loop van de tijd) te identificeren die geassocieerd kunnen zijn met verschillende temporele patronen van zelfmoordgerelateerd gedrag (dat wil zeggen alcoholgebruik/misbruik ) en cognitie (d.w.z. depressie); en ten slotte, om te bepalen of een eenvoudige, via internet aangeboden korte interventie risicovol gedrag onder de veteranenpopulatie kan verminderen.

Experimenteel: Interventievoorwaarde
Deelnemers die aan de interventieconditie zijn toegewezen, worden aan het begin van het onderzoek (12 maanden na hun scheiding) uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan een internetgebaseerde interventie.

De interventie is een online module die toegankelijk is via smartphone, tablet, computer of ander apparaat.
Deelnemers ontvangen informatie over alcoholverwachtingen, alcoholgebruik en -normen, identiteit (militair, veteraan, burger), slaap, stress en strategieën om ermee om te gaan op het werk.

De controlegroep krijgt deze maand-12 geen internetgebaseerde interventie aangeboden.
