Restauranter er normative spisesammenhænge for mange familier. Restaurantmåltider har en tendens til at være højere i kalorier og lavere i ernæringsmæssig kvalitet end dem, der tilberedes derhjemme. Målretning af børns madudvalg i restauranter har potentialet til at forbedre kostkvaliteten, mindske overskydende energiindtag og forme sunde vaner. Formålet med denne undersøgelse er at gøre sundere børns måltidsmuligheder mere tiltalende og nemmere at vælge via en in-restaurant intervention, der kombinerer gentagen eksponering og valg af arkitekturstrategier.
Seks lokationer af en hurtig-service-restaurant vil blive parret baseret på indkomstniveauer i de omkringliggende folketællinger. En lokation fra hvert par vil blive randomiseret til hver undersøgelsesgruppe (intervention, kontrol). Rekruttering og dataindsamling vil blive gennemført på tværs af 3 kohorter. Efter rekruttering vil familier blive bedt om at bestille og spise, som de plejer. Alle deltagende familier vil derefter gennemføre målinger af børns ordrer, indtag og demografi. Så vil familierne modtage dækkeservietter og hyppige spisekort. Familier i interventionsrestauranter vil modtage dækkeservietter, der fremmer sundere børnemåltider. Disse familier vil også modtage et hyppigt spisekort, som efter at have købt et af de fremhævede sundere børnemåltider gennem 6 lejligheder, gør dem berettigede til et gratis børnemåltid efter eget valg i en forudbestemt indløsningsperiode. I kontrolgruppen vil der blive udleveret generiske dækkeservietter efter indsamling af baseline data, og familier vil også blive forsynet med hyppige spisekort, som kan bruges til alle børnemåltider. I de efterfølgende eksponeringsperioder, der varer omkring 2 måneder pr. kohorte, vil familier vende tilbage til den restaurant, hvor de blev rekrutteret på en ugentlig basis. Dækkeservietter vil være tilgængelige ved restaurantens indgang, og tilsvarende skiltning vil blive vist i restauranten. I interventionsrestauranter vil skilte reklamere for promoverede måltider og mulighed for at vælge et legetøj i stedet for dessert. Deltagende børn vil være i stand til at bruge deres frequent diner-kort i denne tid til at tjene et gratis måltid i den efterfølgende indløsningsperiode. Familier vil også blive bedt om at udfylde en kort online-undersøgelse en gang om ugen for at overvåge restaurantprotektion. I hver restaurant vil undersøgelsespersonalet udføre observationer af en delprøve af deltagende familie- og serverinteraktioner. Endelig vil postvurderinger blive afsluttet i forudbestemte indløsningsperioder, der varer omkring 3 måneder pr. kohorte. Dækkeservietter og skilte vil stadig være tilgængelige på restauranter i denne periode. Studiepersonale vil indsamle de hyppige spisekort og bede familier om at bestille og spise, som de plejer, og om ikke at smide mad eller madrester ud. Familier vil være i stand til at indløse optjente gratis børnemåltider i denne periode. Når familien er færdig med at spise, vil studiepersonalet nærme sig bordet for at administrere undersøgelsesforanstaltninger, der vurderer ordrer, perspektiver på måltidet og indtag. Endelig vil familier også blive bedt om at gennemføre en online kosttilbagekaldelse (ASA24) efter deres eftervurdering.
De specifikke mål med denne undersøgelse er: (1) at teste virkningerne af en sundere børns måltidsintervention på børns måltidsbestillinger, og (2) at teste effekter af en sundere børns måltidsintervention på børns kostindtag. Det er en hypotese, at (1a) børn i interventionsrestauranterne vil være mere tilbøjelige end kontroller til at vælge et af de fremmede sundere børnemåltider efter test, (1b) børn i interventionsgruppen vil bestille færre kalorier og desserter og mindre mættede fedt, natrium og sukker efter test versus kontroller, (1c) de fremmede sundere måltider vil udgøre en større procentdel af børnemåltider bestilt i interventionsrestauranter sammenlignet med kontroller baseret på salgsdata i hele undersøgelsesperioden, og (2) sammenlignet med kontroller, vil børn i interventionsgruppen indtage færre kalorier og mindre mættet fedt, natrium og sukker i restauranten ved post-testen.

Inklusionskriterier:
- Flydende engelsk (forælder/værge og barn)
- 18 år eller ældre (forælder/værge)
- I alderen 4-8 år (barn)
- Spiser mad fra restauranter mindst en gang om ugen (barn)
- Har ikke allergier, der udelukker sikker deltagelse i undersøgelsen (barn)
- Spise et måltid i restauranten på tidspunktet for rekruttering/baseline-vurdering
- Deltog ikke i pilotfasen af denne undersøgelse, som involverede smagstest af mulige sundere måltidsmuligheder hos samme restaurantkæde
Ekskluderingskriterier:
- Er under 18 år (forælder/værge)
- Har ikke et barn i intervallet 4-8 år
- Taler ikke engelsk flydende (forælder/værge og barn)
- Spiser ikke mad fra en restaurant mindst en gang om ugen (barn)
- Har fødevareallergi, der udelukker sikker deltagelse i undersøgelsen (barn)
- Ikke at spise et måltid i restauranten ved rekruttering/baseline

Aktiv komparator: Generic placemats and frequent diner cards
Participants will receive generic placemats listing all of the restaurant's kids' meals.
Families will also receive a generic frequent diner card, which after purchasing (any) kids' meals across 6 occasions, makes them eligible for a free kids' meal of their choice during a predetermined redemption period.
Corresponding signage will be displayed in the restaurant.
