英国では毎年、1,200 人が脊髄損傷を受け、600 人が馬尾症候群、6,000 人が多発性硬化症、300 人が横断性脊髄炎と診断されます。 これらの 4 つの患者グループはすべて脊髄の神経障害を患っており、その結果、神経因性膀胱機能不全として知られる正常な膀胱機能が失われています。 これは、尿路感染症 (UTI) につながる可能性があります。 UTI は一般的に再発する衰弱性の合併症であり、脊椎患者は患者 1 人あたり平均 2.5 回のエピソードを経験しています。 これは、病院の再入院の 16% と、毎年 NHS が UTI の治療に費やす最大 1 億 2,500 万ポンドの医療費をもたらすだけでなく、患者の生活の質に劇的な影響を与えます。

最近発行された「英国の 5 か年抗菌薬耐性戦略」では、政策立案者は代替予防治療の研究の重要性を強調しました。 免疫療法は、UTI管理のための抗生物質療法のような(費用対効果の高い)代替手段となる可能性があります。 市中感染型複雑性尿路感染症の少なくとも 83% は、大腸菌 (E. 大腸菌)。 Uro-Vaxom(登録商標)(OM-Pharma、スイス)は、大腸菌膜糖タンパク質の6mgの凍結乾燥(熱不活化)混合物からなる経口投与の細菌ワクチンである。
以前の研究では、Uro-Vaxom® が膀胱炎を再発する健康な女性の UTI を大幅に減少させ、安全に使用できることが示されました。

包含基準:
- 脊髄損傷、多発性硬化症、横断性脊髄炎または馬尾損傷の臨床診断を受けている;
- -少なくとも12か月間、脊椎病理の診断を受けている;
- 基礎疾患に12週間大きな変化がない
- 地域に住んでいること(施設介護ではありません)
- 18歳から75歳まで
- -過去12か月間に抗生物質を使用して治療された尿路感染症のエピソードが少なくとも3回ありました;
- -出産可能年齢の女性が、研究期間中避妊を使用する意思がある場合
- -インフォームドコンセントを与える精神的能力を持っている
除外基準:
- -恥骨上カテーテル法を除いて、膀胱に外科的変化がありました。
- -有効成分またはUro-Vaxom®の賦形剤のいずれかに対する既知の過敏症
ゼラチンを含む製品を摂取したくない(例: 菜食主義者)
- 抗生物質が14日間使用されず、UTIの症状が治まるまで、募集を延期することができます
