Det overordnede målet med denne studien er å gjennomføre en longitudinell observasjonsstudie for å undersøke sammenhengen mellom tidlig OPC og utbruddet og alvorlighetsgraden av S-ECC for å bedre forstå rollen til Candida (spesielt C. albicans) ved alvorlig karies i barndommen. Etterforskerne vil teste hypotesen om at OPC er assosiert med S-ECC ved å modifisere plakkmikrobiotaen og øke virulensen på en måte som bidrar til tidlig utvikling av sykdommen.
Til denne studien vil totalt 60 spedbarn (i alderen 6-15 måneder) med eller uten en historie med OPC i sitt første leveår bli registrert, basert på inklusjons- og eksklusjonskriteriene. Forsøkspersonene vil få sin medisinske/tannlegehistorie gjennomgått fra medisinske journaler. Ved hvert studiebesøk (Baseline, 6-måneders, 12-måneders, 18-måneders og 24-måneders oppfølginger), vil en muntlig undersøkelse inkludert bløtvev og kariesundersøkelse bli utført av en kalibrert evaluator. Tannplakk-/ orale vattpinneprøver vil bli samlet inn ved hvert studiebesøk. I tillegg vil en omfattende undersøkelse inkludert demografisk status, munnhygiene, kosthold, levering og fôringsmetode samt gjeldende medisinbruk også bli samlet inn.

Inklusjonskriterier:
- Mannlige eller kvinnelige individer i en alder av 6-15 måneder
- Må ha minst én fullt frembruten tann ved baseline-besøket
- Foreldre/foresatte villig og i stand til å gi informert samtykke
- Med eller uten OPC-historie (studieteamet vil registrere 30 deltakere med og 30 deltakere uten OPC-historie)
Ekskluderingskriterier:
- Tilstedeværelse av en systemisk medisinsk tilstand (f.eks. Downs syndrom osv.)
- Tilstedeværelse av en orofacial deformitet
- Tilstedeværelse av tannkaries
- Bruk av systemisk antimikrobiell terapi innen 30 dager etter baseline-besøket
- Tilstedeværelse av ethvert forhold som etter utrederens mening gjør at deltakelse i prosjektet ikke er til den enkeltes beste.
