Het algemene doel van deze studie is om een longitudinaal observationeel onderzoek uit te voeren om de associatie van vroege OPC met het begin en de ernst van S-ECC te onderzoeken om de rol van Candida (met name C. albicans) bij ernstige kindercariës beter te begrijpen. De onderzoekers zullen de hypothese testen dat OPC geassocieerd is met S-ECC door de plaquemicrobiota te modificeren en de virulentie te versterken op een manier die bevorderlijk is voor de vroege ontwikkeling van de ziekte.
Voor deze studie zullen in totaal 60 baby's (6-15 maanden oud) met of zonder een voorgeschiedenis van OPC in hun eerste levensjaar worden ingeschreven, op basis van de in- en exclusiecriteria. Proefpersonen zullen hun medische/tandheelkundige geschiedenis laten beoordelen aan de hand van medische dossiers. Bij elk studiebezoek (baseline, 6 maanden, 12 maanden, 18 maanden en 24 maanden follow-ups) zal een mondeling onderzoek inclusief weke delen en cariësonderzoek worden uitgevoerd door een gekalibreerde beoordelaar. Bij elk studiebezoek zullen monsters van tandplak/uitstrijkjes worden verzameld. Daarnaast zal er een uitgebreide enquête worden verzameld over de demografische status, mondhygiëne, dieet, bevalling en voedingsmethode, evenals het huidige medicatiegebruik.

Inclusiecriteria:
- Mannelijke of vrouwelijke individuen op de leeftijd van 6-15 maanden oud
- Moet ten minste één volledig doorgebroken tand hebben bij het basisbezoek
- Ouder/voogd bereid en in staat geïnformeerde toestemming te geven
- Met of zonder een voorgeschiedenis van OPC (het onderzoeksteam zal 30 deelnemers inschrijven met en 30 deelnemers zonder een voorgeschiedenis van OPC)
Uitsluitingscriteria:
- Aanwezigheid van een systemische medische aandoening (bijv. Downsyndroom enz.)
- Aanwezigheid van een orofaciale misvorming
- Aanwezigheid van tandcariës
- Gebruik van systemische antimicrobiële therapie binnen 30 dagen na het basisbezoek
- Aanwezigheid van een aandoening die, naar de mening van de onderzoeker, deelname aan het project niet in het belang van het individu maakt.
