Yksityiskohtainen kuvaus
Tämän tutkimuksen yleisenä tavoitteena on suorittaa pitkittäinen havainnointitutkimus, jossa tutkitaan varhaisen OPC:n yhteyttä S-ECC:n puhkeamiseen ja vaikeusasteeseen, jotta ymmärrettäisiin paremmin Candida-bakteerin (erityisesti C. albicansin) rooli vaikeassa lapsuuden karieksessa. Tutkijat testaavat hypoteesia, että OPC liittyy S-ECC:hen modifioimalla plakin mikrobiota ja lisäämällä virulenssia tavalla, joka edistää taudin varhaista kehittymistä.
Tähän tutkimukseen otetaan mukaan yhteensä 60 vauvaa (6–15 kuukauden ikäisiä), joilla on tai ei ole ollut OPC-sairautta ensimmäisenä elinvuotena, mukaanlukien mukaan ja poissulkemiskriteerit. Koehenkilöiden lääketieteellinen/hammashistoria tarkistetaan lääketieteellisistä tiedoista. Jokaisella opintokäynnillä (perustilanne, 6 kuukauden, 12 kuukauden, 18 kuukauden ja 24 kuukauden seuranta) kalibroitu arvioija suorittaa suututkimuksen, joka sisältää pehmytkudos- ja kariestutkimuksen. Hammasplakki-/suupuikkonäytteitä kerätään jokaisella tutkimuskäynnillä. Lisäksi kerätään kattava kysely, joka sisältää demografisen tilanteen, suuhygienian, ruokavalion, synnytyksen ja ruokintatavan sekä nykyisen lääkkeiden käytön.

Sisällyttämiskriteerit:
- Mies- tai naarashenkilöt 6-15 kuukauden iässä
- Vähintään yksi täysin puhjennut hammas on oltava lähtötilanteessa
- Vanhempi/huoltaja haluaa ja pystyy antamaan tietoisen suostumuksen
- OPC-historian kanssa tai ilman (tutkimusryhmä ilmoittaa 30 osallistujaa, joilla on OPC-historiaa, ja 30 osallistujaa ilman OPC-historiaa)
Poissulkemiskriteerit:
- Systeeminen sairaus (esim. Downin oireyhtymä jne.)
- Suun kasvojen epämuodostuman esiintyminen
- Hammaskarieksen esiintyminen
- Systeemisen antimikrobisen hoidon käyttö 30 päivän kuluessa lähtötilanteesta
- Sellaisten olosuhteiden olemassaolo, jotka tutkijan mielestä tekevät hankkeeseen osallistumisesta yksilön edun vastaista.
