O objetivo geral deste estudo é realizar um estudo observacional longitudinal para investigar a associação de OPC precoce com o início e a gravidade da S-ECC para entender melhor o papel de Candida (particularmente C. albicans) na cárie infantil grave. Os investigadores testarão a hipótese de que o OPC está associado ao S-ECC, modificando a microbiota da placa e aumentando a virulência de uma maneira que conduza ao desenvolvimento precoce da doença.
Para este estudo, serão incluídos 60 lactentes (de 6 a 15 meses de idade) com ou sem história de CPO no primeiro ano de vida, com base nos critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Os indivíduos terão seu histórico médico/dentário revisado a partir dos registros médicos. Em cada visita de estudo (linha de base, acompanhamentos de 6 meses, 12 meses, 18 meses e 24 meses), um exame oral incluindo tecido mole e exame de cárie será realizado por um avaliador calibrado. Amostras de placa dental/swab oral serão coletadas em cada visita do estudo. Além disso, também será coletada uma pesquisa abrangente, incluindo status demográfico, higiene bucal, dieta, parto e método de alimentação, bem como o uso atual de medicamentos.

Critério de inclusão:
- Indivíduos do sexo masculino ou feminino com idade entre 6 e 15 meses
- Deve ter pelo menos um dente totalmente irrompido na consulta inicial
- Pai/responsável disposto e capaz de fornecer consentimento informado
- Com ou sem histórico de OPC (a equipe do estudo inscreverá 30 participantes com e 30 participantes sem histórico de OPC)
Critério de exclusão:
- Presença de uma condição médica sistêmica (por exemplo, Síndrome de Down, etc.)
- Presença de deformidade orofacial
- Presença de cárie dentária
- Uso de terapia antimicrobiana sistêmica dentro de 30 dias da visita inicial
- Presença de qualquer condição que, na opinião do investigador, faça com que a participação no projeto não seja do melhor interesse do indivíduo.

|
A cárie será medida pelo sistema de pontuação ICDAS; Amostras de placa e swab oral serão coletadas em cada visita do estudo (linha de base, acompanhamentos de 6 meses, 12 meses, 18 meses e 24 meses); Cepas de Candida serão detectadas usando técnicas de sequenciamento dependentes e independentes de cultura.
