Det overordnede mål med denne undersøgelse er at udføre et longitudinelt observationsstudie for at undersøge sammenhængen mellem tidlig OPC og starten og sværhedsgraden af S-ECC for bedre at forstå rollen af Candida (især C. albicans) i alvorlig caries i barndommen. Efterforskerne vil teste hypotesen om, at OPC er forbundet med S-ECC ved at modificere plaque-mikrobiotaen og øge virulensen på en måde, der er befordrende for den tidlige udvikling af sygdommen.
Til denne undersøgelse vil i alt 60 spædbørn (i alderen 6-15 måneder) med eller uden en historie med OPC i deres første leveår blive tilmeldt, baseret på inklusions- og eksklusionskriterierne. Forsøgspersoner vil få deres medicinske/tandlægehistorie gennemgået fra lægejournaler. Ved hvert studiebesøg (Baseline, 6-måneders, 12-måneders, 18-måneders og 24-måneders opfølgninger) vil en mundtlig undersøgelse inklusive bløddels- og cariesundersøgelse blive udført af en kalibreret evaluator. Prøver af tandplak/podningsprøver vil blive indsamlet ved hvert studiebesøg. Derudover vil der også blive indsamlet en omfattende undersøgelse, herunder demografisk status, mundhygiejne, kost, levering og fodringsmetode samt det aktuelle medicinforbrug.

Inklusionskriterier:
- Mandlige eller kvindelige individer i alderen 6-15 måneder
- Skal have mindst én fuldt frembrudt tand ved baseline besøg
- Forælder/værge er villig og i stand til at give informeret samtykke
- Med eller uden OPC-historie (undersøgelsesholdet vil tilmelde 30 deltagere med og 30 deltagere uden OPC-historie)
Ekskluderingskriterier:
- Tilstedeværelse af en systemisk medicinsk tilstand (f. Downs syndrom osv.)
- Tilstedeværelse af en orofacial deformitet
- Tilstedeværelse af karies
- Anvendelse af systemisk antimikrobiel behandling inden for 30 dage efter baseline besøget
- Tilstedeværelse af ethvert forhold, der efter efterforskerens opfattelse gør, at deltagelse i projektet ikke er i den enkeltes bedste interesse.
