Upośledzenia elastyczności metabolicznej, znane również jako sztywność metaboliczna, uważa się za podstawową przyczynę chorób metabolicznych, takich jak cukrzyca typu 2. Długotrwałe niskie spożycie płynów może zwiększać ryzyko wystąpienia cukrzycy typu 2 z powodu insulinooporności, która jest formą sztywności metabolicznej. Co więcej, wykazano, że niskie spożycie płynów upośledza zdolność do zmiany preferencji paliwowych podczas ćwiczeń.
