Sisällyttämiskriteerit:
- Mies- tai naispuoliset avohoidot, jotka ovat vähintään 18-vuotiaita
- Potilaat, joilla on diagnosoitu vaiheen 1 tai 2 essentiaalinen hypertensio
- Normaalit fyysisen tutkimuksen löydökset, EKG-tulokset ja rintakehän röntgenkuvaus; tai tutkijan epänormaalit löydökset, jotka eivät ole kliinisesti merkittäviä
Poissulkemiskriteerit:
- Toissijainen hypertensio tai vaikea verenpainetauti
- Kliinisesti merkittävä sydän- ja verisuonisairaus tai sydämen vajaatoiminta
- Lääketieteellinen vasta-aihe nykyisen verenpainetta alentavan hoidon lopettamiselle
- Tyypin 1 diabetes mellituksen historia
