Tietokanta kerää havaintoja sekä äideistä että vauvoista sekä käytetyistä hoidoista ja imeväisten tuloksista. Kerätyt tiedot eivät liity sairauteen tai hoitoon. Kerätyt tiedot sisältävät tietoa seuraavista:
- Äidin ja vauvan väestötiedot
- Äidin terveys, synnytys ja synnytys
- Vauvan terveys maahantulon yhteydessä, toimenpiteet ja interventiot sekä lääketieteelliset tulokset
Näitä tietoja käytetään: toimittamaan jäsenkeskuksille raportteja laadun parantamiseen käytettäväksi; tutkia perusominaisuuksien, hoitojen ja tulosten välisiä yhteyksiä; ja seurata sairauksien ilmaantuvuuden suuntauksia ja hoitojen tehokkuutta.

- Jokainen elävänä syntynyt lapsi, jonka syntymäpaino on 401–1500 grammaa tai 22 viikkoa 0 päivää ja 29 viikkoa 6 päivää raskausikä (mukaan lukien), joka on syntynyt Vermont Oxford Networkin jäsenkeskukseen tai otettu siihen 28 päivän sisällä elämästään ilman ensin kotiin, riippumatta siitä, missä vauva saa hoitoa
Poissulkemiskriteerit:
- Kuolleena syntyneet vauvat
- Vauvat kotiutettiin ennen jäsenkeskukseen ottamista
- Vauvat hyväksyttiin 28 päivän kuluttua

Aineistoa ovat muun muassa vauvan ja äidin ominaisuudet, synnytyssalitoimenpiteet, hengityselinten hoito ja tulokset, leikkaukset, infektiot, muut vakavat komplikaatiot ja oleskelun pituus.
Tiedonkeruun aikakehykset sisältävät: syntymän ominaisuudet; päivänä 28; ja purkamisen yhteydessä.
Seuranta päättyy kotiinlähtöön (mukaan lukien pois siirretyt pikkulapset) tai vuoden iässä.
