O banco de dados coleta dados de linha de base observacionais sobre mães e bebês, e as terapias usadas e os resultados dos bebês. As informações coletadas não são específicas para uma doença ou tratamento. Os dados recolhidos incluem informação sobre:
- Dados demográficos da mãe e do bebê
- Saúde da mãe, trabalho de parto e parto
- Saúde do bebê na admissão, procedimentos e intervenções e resultados médicos
Esses dados são usados para: fornecer relatórios aos centros membros para uso na melhoria da qualidade; examinar associações entre características basais, tratamentos e resultados; e acompanhar as tendências de incidência de doenças e eficácia das terapias.

Critério de inclusão:
- Qualquer criança que nasça viva e cujo peso ao nascer seja de 401 a 1500 gramas ou 22 semanas 0 dias e 29 semanas 6 dias de idade gestacional (inclusive) que nasça ou seja internada em um centro membro da Vermont Oxford Network dentro de 28 dias de vida sem ter foi para casa pela primeira vez, independentemente de onde o bebê recebe os cuidados
Critério de exclusão:
- bebês natimortos
- Bebês com alta para casa antes da admissão em um centro para membros
- Lactentes admitidos após 28 dias

Os itens de dados incluem características infantis e maternas, intervenções na sala de parto, cuidados e resultados respiratórios, cirurgias, infecções, outras complicações graves e tempo de internação.
Os prazos para a recolha de dados incluem: características do nascimento; no dia 28; e na alta.
O rastreamento termina na alta para casa (inclusive para bebês transferidos) ou em um ano.
