Troubles de la dénomination (anomie) :
Les laboratoires du Dr Swathi Kiran (Boston University) et du Dr David Caplan (Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital) étudieront la récupération du langage chez les adultes souffrant d'anomie (troubles de la dénomination) à la suite d'un AVC. Les participants recevront un traitement axé sur les caractéristiques sémantiques des objets communs (par exemple, que les oiseaux peuvent voler). L'étude examinera comment la dénomination et d'autres capacités linguistiques changent en réponse au traitement, ainsi que la façon dont le cerveau change, tel que mesuré par l'imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM) et d'autres techniques.
Troubles de l'orthographe/de l'écriture (dysgraphie) :
À l'Université Johns Hopkins, le laboratoire du Dr Brenda Rapp étudiera la neurobiologie de la récupération du langage chez les personnes atteintes de dysgraphie (troubles de l'orthographe et de l'écriture) résultant d'un accident vasculaire cérébral. Dans cette étude, le traitement se concentrera sur l'amélioration de la capacité d'orthographe. L'étude examinera comment l'orthographe et d'autres capacités linguistiques changent en réponse au traitement, ainsi que la façon dont le cerveau change, tel que mesuré par l'imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM) et d'autres techniques.
Déficits dans la compréhension et la production de phrases :
Le laboratoire du Dr Cynthia Thompson à l'Université Northwestern étudiera la récupération du langage chez les personnes ayant des déficits dans la production et la compréhension des phrases. Le traitement se concentre sur la production et la compréhension de phrases complexes. Au départ (semaine 0) et après la période de traitement (semaine 12), les participants participent à des tests de langage, de suivi oculaire et d'IRM, afin d'apprendre comment le traitement du langage, ainsi que la fonction cérébrale, changent en tant que résultat du traitement.

Critère d'intégration:
- Aphasie suite à un AVC
- Stoke était il y a au moins 1 an
- Médicalement stable
- Droitier
- Vision et audition normales ou « corrigées à la normale »
- L'anglais comme langue principale
- Au moins un diplôme d'études secondaires
Critère d'exclusion:
- Antécédents de maladie neurologique, de traumatisme crânien, de troubles psychiatriques, d'alcoolisme ou de troubles du développement de la parole, du langage ou de l'apprentissage

Les deux groupes seront évalués au départ (semaine 0), à la semaine 12 et à la semaine 24.
